A devastating earthquake rumbled throughout Southeast Asia on Friday, causing ONE Championship to cancel their weekly card from the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
A 7.7 magnitude earthquake was felt throughout Myanmar and Thailand and even stretched to some provinces in China, per Al Jazeera. The natural disaster caused widespread damage throughout Myanmar and Thailand, collapsing buildings and putting the lives of hundreds on the line.
The epicentre of the earthquake was felt in Myanmar, where at least 144 deaths and over 700 injuries have been reported. But the earthquake stretched hundreds of miles into Bangkok, where some towering buildings collapsed and have left at least eight dead.
“I felt things moving and I thought they were moving the tables,” Kevin Riley, who was in Chiang Mai, told BBC. “I looked up and everything was moving.”
The earthquake, which struck just hours before ONE Championship was expected to stage ONE Friday Fights 102, caused the event to expectedly be cancelled by the promotion.
“We regret to inform you that due to the recent earthquake in Myanmar and its effects on Bangkok, tonight’s ONE Friday Fights 102 has been canceled,” they said in a social media post. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected.”
It’s currently not known whether the fights will be rebooked for a later date.
Bangkok, the city where ONE has hosted a large majority of its events in recent years, has been declared a “disaster zone” following the incident.
