After a year of being absent from Invicta FC, Jinh Yu Frey will return on Friday to defend her Atomweight Championship against Ashley Cummins. The fight headlines Invicta FC 39, with six other fights below it on the card.
Bout 1: Kristine Pettigrew (1-0) vs. Monica Franco (1-0) (Bantamweight)
The evening will kick off with two undefeated fighters making their respective Invicta debuts. Kristine Pettigrew made her debut as a pro in December, getting a first round rear naked choke win over Maritza Sanchez at Combate 52. She fought in amateur MMA for five fights, winning them all. Her opponent, Monica Franco, made her debut in MMA in 2015, but hasn’t returned to the sport up until now.
Bout 2: Jillian DeCoursey (3-2) vs. Linda Mihalec (2-0) (Atomweight)
Returning after her first fight outside of Invicta, Jillian DeCoursey will be put against the undefeated atomweight Linda Mihalec. DeCoursey has two wins and losses in Invicta, with her last fight being a stoppage win against Katie Perez in CFFC. Mihalec debuted in Invicta in October, going to a decision victory over Marisa Messer-Belenchia.
Bout 3: Erin Blanchfield (4-1) vs. Victoria Leonardo (6-1) (Flyweight)
Attempting to bounce back from a loss at Invicta Phoenix Series 2, Victoria Leonardo will return to face Erin Blanchfield. Leonardo’s loss (decision after one round of fighting) broke her three-fight winning streak, which was generated through Invicta and Bellator fights. Blanchfield fought in CFFC in 2019, putting in an americana to stop Gabriella Gulfin in the first round. That
Bout 4: Alesha Zappitella (5-2) vs. Kelly D’Angelo (4-2) (Atomweight)
Kelly D’Angelo got two major wins in Invicta last year, going to the scorecards against Lindsey VanZandt and Jillian DeCoursey. She looks to add another win to her resume on Friday, as she takes on Alesha Zappitella. Zappitella is making her return on Invicta on this card, heading to RIZIN for a fight against Kanna Asakura in the summer. She looks to break a two-fight losing streak after having a win-less 2019.
Bout 5: Pearl Gonzalez (10-4) vs. Miranda Maverick (6-2) (Flyweight)
In the co-main event, Pearl Gonzalez will fight Miranda Maverick. Shanna Young versus Daiana Torquato was originally meant to go before this bout on the card, although it was cancelled due to Young having an illness. Gonzalez is the most experienced fighter on this card. She has a 4-1 record in Invicta, recently winning over Brogan Walker-Sanchez. Maverick is the winner of the flyweight tournament at Invicta Phoenix Series 2, defeating DeAnna Bennett in the finals.
Bout 6: Jinh Yu Frey (8-4) vs. Ashley Cummins (7-4) (Invicta FC Atomweight Championship)
The main event of Invicta FC 39 will see Jinh Yu Frey face Ashley Cummins in a rematch. The fight was originally meant to be Frey defending her championship, but that changed after Frey missed weight on Friday. Coming in just over the atomweight limit, Frey had her belt stripped from her. Now, the only fighter able to come away with a belt in this fight is Cummins. Frey won the belt in 2018, going to a decision against Minna Grusander. She made her first defence of the belt when winning the rematch. In her last fight, Frey failed to capture the RIZIN Super Atomweight Championship, losing to Ayaka Hamasaki at RIZIN 16.
Frey and Cummins last fought one another in 2017, with Frey winning via unanimous decision. Since then, Cummins has won two in a row. She did not fight in 2019, however was meant to fight Frey in October, with that being scrapped due to Frey suffering an injury. Cummins has been with Invicta since the very start, with a 4-4 record in the promotion overall.
Invicta FC will return in march with Phoenix Series 3. The premise of the event is that it features a one-night tournament, with fighters competing three times. Headlining the card currently is undefeated Lisa Verzosa facing Julija Stoliorenko for the vacant Invicta Flyweight Championship.
