Adesanya Retains UFC Middleweight Belt In Slow Paced Unanimous Decision

Israel Adesanya retained his UFC Middleweight Championship on Saturday, getting a unanimous decision victory over Yoel Romero. The fight main evented UFC 248, which was at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

The key to Adesanya’s win was leg kicks, which he consistently landed through the 25 minutes.

“I did what I had to do. You can see he will be limping after this,” said Adesanya after the fight, referring to the damage he did to Romero’s legs.

The slow paced battle had fans divided after all five rounds had concluded. Fans booed during the fight, even turning on their phone flashlights at one point.

Romero, who lost the fight, was also not a fan of how the fight panned out.

“The people pay because they want to see the good fight, not this,” said Romero after the fight.

Before the fourth round started, referee Dan Miragliotta told the fighters to “give the judges something to score.”

This fight was the first defence for Adesanya’s middleweight belt, which he earned in October, dethroning former champion Robert Whittaker within two rounds.

After the fight, Adesanya called out middleweight contender Paulo Costa, who was in attendance for the fight.

“Costa, I’ll see you soon boy,” said Adesanya, targeting the undefeated Brazilian as his next opponent.

In the co-main event of the evening, a completely opposite-paced fight saw Zhang Weili defend her UFC Strawweight Championship against Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
