Zhang Weili made the first defence of her UFC Strawweight Championship on Saturday, getting a split decision (48-47, 48-47 & 48-47) win after a five round battle against Joanna Jedrzejczyk. The win was on the co-main event of UFC 248 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
The fight was mostly a stand-up battle. The fight was fast paced from start to finish, with both fighters having their moments.
Jedrzejczyk’s face was quite damaged after the fight. A hematoma started to develop on her forehead in the second round, with the swelling increasing as the fight went on. A punch damaged the nose of Jedrzejczyk as well.
“I wasn’t really sure that I got it,” said Zhang after the fight, uncertain about if she was going to edge out the close fight.
Zhang, the first Chinese fighter in UFC history addressed the COVID-19 (AKA coronavirus) outbreak after the fight.
“It took us a long way to get here because of the coronavirus,” said Zhang after her win. “Our country is suffering from a big tragedy right now, so we’ll come together.”
The fight saw lots of praise, with people already electing it as fight of the year.
The main event of UFC 248 saw Israel Adesanya put his UFC Middleweight Championship on the line against Yoel Romero.
