Bellator Unveils Their Marquee Summer and Fall Fights

Bellator had some of its biggest names in one building on Monday, promoting their big upcoming matchups in 2020. A press conference at a ViacomCBS building in New York, New York, USA played host to 16 Bellator fighters that have upcoming fights.

SBG Ireland Finds Foes In Pitbull Brothers

Fighters that train out of SBG Ireland found themselves exchanging in verbal combat with the Pitbull Brothers at the press conference.

“The only problem is that James Gallagher loves to run from fighters like Leondro Higo,” said Patricky Pitbull.

His soon to be opponent Peter Queally defended his fellow SBG gym member.

“What are you talking to a bantamweight for? I’ll smash your whole face in,” said Queally, kicking off the hostilities of the press conference.

The rivalry between Queally and Pitbull will have to endure quite the wait, as they fight on October 3rd at Bellator Dublin.

The other half of the Pitbull brothers, Patricio is set for a quarter-final Featherweight Grand Prix fight against Pedro Carvalho. They exchanged words at the conference as well

“He’s just a chess player trying to pass time, win rounds,” said Carvalho, insulting the style Pitbull fights.

“I have more knockouts than you have victories,” Pitbull snapped back.

Carvalho meets Pitbull this Friday in the quarter-finals of the Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, USA.

Rebooked Big Bouts

Two of Bellator’s main events which have been cancelled recently will be given a second go. The December 28th rematch between Michael Chandler and Benson Henderson will take place in Chicago, Illinois on June 6th.

“I’ve been fighting for the title or fighting in elimination bouts my entire career here,” said Chandler, impying whoever wins the fight would be next for a title fight.

The more recent pairing of Ireland’s Jack Gallagher and The United Kingdom’s Cal Ellenor has been rebooked as well. Originally set to take place in Dublin, Ireland, the fight switched home turfs, as it will be held in London on April 16th.

“I’m feeling tip-top shape and ready to knuckle down,” said SBG Ireland trained Gallagher when talking about the back injury he suffered that took him out of the first iteration of this fight.

Former rugby player James Haskell was also announced to debut on the London card. He made the announcement of switching to MMA back in August.

Cal Ellenor was somewhat quiet to start the press conference, out of the blue proclaiming how his fight with Gallagher will pan out.

“You’re getting slept mate, 100 percent,” said Ellenor.

Gallagher was quick to point out Ellenor has yet to attain a knockout win

“I’ve put bigger men down. You’re a man in a child’s body,” Ellenor said to Gallagher.

Featherweight Grand Prix Rolls On

Bellator’s Featherweight Grand Prix, which began in September, carries on throughout this year.

The second half of the quarter-finals sees Daniel Weichel face Emmanuel Sanchez. They battle this Friday, facing the winner of Carvalho versus Pitbull sometime in the future.

The first of the semi-final bouts is already set, with Darrion Caldwell taking on A.J. McKee on June 6th on a card at the WinTrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois.

“If he wants to be a star he’s gotta go through me,” said Caldwell, talking about his upcoming semi-final fight.

“Anyone standing in my way, they’re gonna get that work,” said McKee.

Bader’s Long Awaited Drop Back Down

Ryan Bader’s return to light heavyweight is set for May 9th, headlining a card from the SAP Center in San Jose, California, USA. He faces rising contender Vadim Nemkov.

“We kinda knew we were going back down,” said Bader, who last defended his 205-pound belt in 2017.

“I will fight my fight with heavy punches and heavy kicks. Of course I’d love to win my fight with a knockout but we’ll see what happens,” said Nemkov’s translator.

The co-main event of the same show will see the vacant Bellator Middleweight Championship up for grabs between Gegard Mousasi and Douglas Lima.

Lima had great praise for the matchup, saying “I want big challenges, and this is the biggest for me right now.”

“I’m going to try to wrestle him … Obviously I feel I have the advantage in the stand-up,” said Mousasi.

Looking Ahead

The aforementioned Bellator event this weekend has 16 fighter overall, with the main card beginning at 10:00PM EST on digital broadcasting platform DAZN.

Apart from the two grand prix fights, the show also features well known names like Matt Mitrione, Paul Daley, Nick Newell and more.
