UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones was taken into custody on Thursday morning under charges of DWI, negligent use of firearms, possession of open container and no proof of insurance in vehicle. The arrest took place in the hometown of Jones, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.
First reported by KOAT, officers in Albuquerque responded to a call at 1 AM which reported gunshots.
When going to the scene, they found Jones seated in his vehicle. He took a breathalyzer test which showed he had double the legal limit of alcohol in his system to drive.
Inspecting the vehicle Jones was in, authorities found a handgun and 750 mL bottle of alcoholic drink “El Recuerdo De Oaxaca Mezcal.”
In papers obtained by MMA Fighting, it says Jones was arrested at 312 Central Ave at 1 AM, being booked officially at 4 AM.
Jones has been involved in two vehicular incidents before. In 2012, the fighter plead guilty to a DWI, going back to an incident earlier that year where he drove a car into a pole in Binghamton, New York, USA.
In 2015, Jones plead guilty to leaving the scene of an accident, being sentenced to probation.
Jones last fought in February, defeating Dominick Reyes via unanimous decision to retain his light heavyweight belt. The fight took place at UFC 247, main eventing the show at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, USA.
