Alexander Gustafsson is back in action, moving up to the heavyweight division to fight Fabricio Werdum. First reported by Raphael Marinho of Combate, the fight will join the July 25th show for UFC.
In 2019, Gustafsson declared retirement from MMA after a loss to Jon Jones.
The Swedish fighter spend his entire UFC career at light heavyweight, with this being his first appearance as a heavyweight.
His opponent, Werdum, will look to break away from his two-fight losing streak. While on paper it’s two losses in a row, one of the losses didn’t carry over much momentum, coming from 2018 against Alexander Volkov.
Breaking his absence from the sport, Werdum returned last May, losing a split decision battle to Alexey Oleinik.
The UFC event, which is set to take place on July 25th, is scheduled to happen at the mysterious “Fight Island.” Set to headline the card is a high-level middleweight battle, with Robert Whittaker being paired against Darren Till.
Werdum joins the card, which has many fellow Brazilian fighters on it. Here’s the full card so far.
