Flashback Friday: WEC 1: Princes of Pain Play-by-Play

The Flashback Friday episode for June 19th, 2020 was coverage of the first WEC event: “Princes of Pain.” This article is the play-by-play for the show. The report for the event can be found here.

Full Coverage:

Bout 1: Cruz Gomez (8-5) vs. Isaias Martinez (2-0)

Martinez was the first to throw a strike, trying for a knee in the first minute. He slipped and fell on his back after, allowing the fight to go to the ground. Gomez took top position in full guard. After moving around on the ground a little, Gomez was able to shift into side control. He moved from half guard to side control many times. After a few minutes of not throwing strikes on the ground, Gomez started to throw some knees and elbows. He scored with knees to the head in side control and north-south. Gomez landed hard elbows from side control, with many bouncing the head of Martinez off of the canvas. The referee stepped in near the end was Martinez got knocked out, ending the fight.

Bout 2: Leonard Garcia (5-1) vs. Victor Estrada (1-4)

Estrada connected with some leg kicks early. Similar to the fight before, Garcia slipped after throwing a kick, landing on his back. Estrada went down as well, taking top position in full guard. Garcia tried for an armbar for a moment, with Estrada escaping and moving into side control. Estrada got up eventually, trying for some sort of leg lock. Garcia was able to take top position and land some strikes before going on his back in an attempt of defending a kneebar. They eventually got back up, where Garcia scored with a high kick and a leg kick. Estrada got a takedown, landing in full guard. Estrada landed some strikes from the position. They got up in a clinch, where Garcia landed two knees to the head. Garcia sprawled after a single leg takedown attempt from Estrada, even getting on his back for a moment. Garcia got up for a moment, going back down with Estrada in top position. While on the bottom, Garcia noticed the camera and gave it a thumbs up. Estrada landed an elbow from the position. The first round ended with Estrada in full guard.

Garcia stopped a takedown early in the second round. He got top position on the ground as Estrada went down first after slipping. Estrada got ahold of a leg, trying for a heel hook. Garcia slipped out and got to the feet. Garcia landed a clean head kick while Estrada ducked down a little, dropping him and ending the fight.

Bout 4: Chris Sanford (0-0) vs. Bobby Martin (0-0)

They clinched up early, both landing knees to the body. Sanford put Martin against the cage, landing punches periodically from the position. They were separated seemingly due to an issue with one of Sanford’s gloves. Despite resuming in stand-up, they were quick to clinch against the cage again. They separated eventually, with Sanford landing some leg kicks and a punch before returning to the clinch. They went to striking again, although not much happened before the round ended.

Sanford was smothered with water in-between rounds, causing splashes of water to come off him as the second round started. The fighters exchanged in a firefight early in the round, with a left hook dropping Martin and ending the fight.

Bout 5: Phil Ensminger (1-3) vs. Gabriel Garcia (1-3)

They clinched up early, landing a knee to the body each. Ensminger kept pressing forward, putting Garcia against the cage eventually. THey separated, with a two-punch combination hurting Garcia. Garcia shot for a takedown, with Ensminger landing some more punches before the referee stopped the fight. Ensminger tried to land another after the referee intervened, being dragged away while the referee had a chokehold on him. He flipped off the crowd before celebrating his win.

Bout 6: Scott Carson (3-0) vs. Bryson Haubrick (0-1)

Carson landed a few leg kicks to start. While still on the feet, Carson got on the back of Haubrick. They went down, where Carson tried for a rear naked choke. He held the choke, even letting go near the end, but Haubrick tapped out and ended the fight.

Bout 7: Tony Alanis (0-0) vs. Bryant Garcia (0-0)

Garcia was advancing at the start, but it was Alanis who was landing shots on the backfoot. He scored a takedown in the first minute of the fight. Garcia rolled out of the position but was hit with a knee to the head in the process. Alanis landed some punches going down in side control for a moment. Going back into full guard, Alanis threw punches until Garcia tapped out.

Bout 8: Lalo Moz (0-0) vs. Bruce Nelson (3-11)

In what was a really quick fight, Moz landed a series of punches that dropped Nelson. The referee was quick to end the fight despite Nelson getting up and protesting the stoppage.

Bout 9: Gan McGee (8-1) vs. Seth Petruzelli (1-1)

McGee haad a clear height advantage over Petruzelli. A takedown attempt was stopped by Petruzelli early on. McGee got the fight to the ground upon second attempt of a single leg takedown, although it did take some time to do so. Petruzelli was able to land an upkcik at one point. McGee got up and rolled into a heel hook that made Petruzelli tap out, ending the fight.

Bout 10: Dan Severn (45-6-3) vs. Travis Fulton (95-31-8)

Severn got a takedown early, although Fulton was able to resist it at the start. Severn landed some punches from top position before they got back up. Fulton was able to stop a takedown, with Severn going for a clinch on the feet after. Severn got a takedown from the clinch, but Fulton reversed it, taking side control on the ground. Fulton moved into full mount, where Severn was able to flip the position and get full guard. Severn pulled back while holding a leg, keeping ahold of the leg until he got top position in side control. He kept this position until the round ended.

Severn clinched up with Fulton at the start of the second round. He was able to get a takedown by slamming Fulton down. Severn went back into full guard. The crowd started to boo after they were in this position for a while. Severn got to his feet, allowing Fulton to get up as well. He got another takedown moments after. They got up again, and this time when Severn got a takedown he landed in side control. He scored with some knees from the position. Severn held Fulton at the knees as the round ended.
