LFA 84: Gonzalez vs. Childers Preview

LFA, one of the most recognized regional promotions in American MMA will return on Friday. Wasting no time in their return, the promotion will look for their new featherweight champion in the main event. Fighting for the vacant LFA Featherweight Championship will be Justin Gonzales and Jake Childers. Here’s a preview of the return of the full show, which is set to happen at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA.

Main Card (9:00PM EDT / 8:00PM CDT) (UFC Fight Pass)

News broke on Thursday that the LFA 84 card would be without one of its fights. Natan Levy was pulled from the card after one of his coaches, John Wood, tested positive for COVID-19, per MyMMANews.com. He was scheduled to fight Ben Lugo.

Bout 1: Kameron Jordan (0-0) vs. Christian Rodriguez (3-0) (Catchweight 140 lbs)

The first fight of the evening sees Kameron Jordan make his debut as a professional against Christian Rodriguez. Jordan fought in amateur MMA extensively, finishing his run with a 13-8 record. He rides a seven-fight winning streak into this matchup. Rodriguez has won three since turning pro, with his most recent fight being his first win in LFA in February.

Bout 2: Maycon Mendonca (8-4) vs. Tyler Ray (6-1) (Welterweight)

In a welterweight battle, Maycon Mendonca and Tyler Ray will battle. Ray has built an impressive five-fight winning streak since 2018, with most wins coming from LFA. Three of the victories came via stoppage, including a win in Bellator over Seth Bass.

Mendonca had a successful run in 2019, defeating Joshua Moreno and Bobby Lee via decision in LFA. The wins snapped a three-fight skid he had before. Mendonca was meant to fight on the original LFA 84 back in March against Mark Martin.

Bout 3: Kamuela Kirk (9-3) vs. Bruno Souza (6-1) (Featherweight)

After a loss on TV series “Dana White’s Contender Series,” Kamuela Kirk will return to LFA to fight Bruno Silva. Kirt fought on the 2019 season of UFC’s show, losing to Billy Quarantillo, who is now a member of the UFC roster. He had a three-fight streak of wins before including two in LFA. A year ago, Souza made his LFA debut with a win over Mike Hamel. He comes off a year layoff looking to get his second.

Bout 4: Shawn West (16-10) vs. Boston Salmon (6-3) (Catchweight 150 lbs)

After a short and unsuccessful two-fight run in the UFC, Boston Salmon returns to the regional scene with a fight against Shawn West. Salmon had signed with the UFC following a successful performance on TV show “Dana White’s Contender Series.” After first-round losses to Khalid Tafa and Randy Costa, Salmon was cut from the promotion. He now faces West, who won his last fight over a year ago via rear naked choke in the first minute. West brings experience into the cage, having fought 26 times in MMA, with his oldest performance dating back to 2010.

Bout 5: Kassius Kayne (11-6) vs. Andre Fialho (10-3) (Welterweight)

Making his LFA debut, Andre Fialho will fight Kassius Kayne. Fialho has been at a high level of MMA for some time now, having fought in promotions like Bellator and PFL previously. After two straight losses in the 2019 PFL season, he’s now in the LFA. His opponent, Kayne, last fought a year ago when he defeated Devoniere Jackson with punches in the second round. He looks to even his LFA record, which has one win and two losses.

Bout 6: Justin Gonzales (10-0) vs. Jake Childers (8-0) (Vacant LFA Featherweight Championship)

The main event of the show sees Justin Gonzales and Jake Childers fight to become the new LFA Featherweight Champion. While neither fighter has a title to lose given that it’s vacant, both fighters will wager their undefeated professional MMA record.s

Gonzales has never stepped foot in the LFA, however, he’s been successful in the regional MMA scene for a while. Only debuting in 2016, Gonzales has picked up 10 wins since. His last fight was on “Dana White’s Contender Series,” and despite a decision win over Zach Zane, he did not get a contract.

Joining the LFA in February of 2019, Childers has quickly become one of the better featherweights in the promotion. After a decision win over Josh Marsh, Childers picked up one round finishes over Jamey Simmons and Nate Richardson.

LFA has shows lined up for the entire month of July, every friday from the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA. Next week, the promotion looks for it’s new strawweight champion in a matchup between Sam Hughes and Vanessa Demopoulos.
