LFA 85: Hughes vs. Demopoulos Play-by-Play

Bout 1: Mitchell Sipe def. Darion Abbey via TKO, Strikes (RD 1, 1:37)

Bout 2: Christian Natividad def. Michael Aquila via KO, Punch (RD 1, 2:48)

Bout 3: Jordan Leavitt def. Leivon Lewis via Submission, Anaconda Choke (RD 2, 2:01)

Bout 4: Leandro Gomes def. Jacob Thrall via Decision, Unanimous

Bout 5: Kevin Natividad def. Kyle Estrada via KO, Uppercut (RD 2, 1:37)

Bout 6: Vanessa Demopoulos def. Sam Hughes via Submission, Reverse Triangle Choke (RD 4, 2:21) (Vacant LFA Strawweight Championship)


Bout 1: Mitchell Sipe (4-2) vs. Darion Abbey (1-1) (Heavyweight)

Sipe came forward with hard hooks early that had Abbey against the cage to start the fight. Sipe clinched up later, putting Abbey against the cage. Sipe connected with more hard punches when they separated. Sipe landed a two-punch combination in the second minute that hurt Abbey, having him back up against the cage. A clinched up Abbey against the cage was hit with a knee that dropped him, ending the fight.

Bout 2: Christian Natividad (0-0) vs. Michael Aquila (1-1) (Bantamweight)

Natividad was quick to clinch and get a takedown. He got out of the position, allowing Aquila to get up too. Natividad landed a two-punch combination that dropped Aquila to his back. Natividad did not go down to the ground with the referee forcing Aquila to stand up shortly after. In a clinch, Aquila pulled guard, taking Natividad down into top position. Natividad eventually stood up, allowing Aquila to get up too. Aquila got dropped by a left hook, with Natividad making him get up again. Aquila failed to get a single leg takedown. A two-punch combination dropped Aquila in the third minute, ending the fight in walk-off fashion.

Bout 3: Jordan Leavitt (5-0) vs. Leivon Lewis (3-0) (Lightweight)

Lewis was aggressive from the start by sprinting at Leavitt. After shooting for a single leg takedown, Leavitt put Lewis in a body lock against the cage. Lewis got a takedown from the position, landing in half guard. They got up in the second minute of the fight and went into a clinch right after. Lewis threw Leavitt down for a clinch after throwing some knees to the body. Leavitt got ahold of a leg from the bottom, threatening a hold for a moment. They went to the feet in a clinch again after Leavitt took top position for a moment. They stayed in a clinch until the fight concluded.

Leavitt got the fight to the ground early, trying for a leg hold for a moment before Lewis escaped. On his back, Leavitt tried for a reverse triangle choke. He threw some elbows to the head before Lewis escaped, getting into full guard on top after. Leavitt was able to sweep and get to the feet while trying for a choke. They went down while Leavitt tried for an anaconda choke that made Lewis tap out. After the fight he did a splits and dance move “the worm.”

Bout 4: Leandro Gomes (5-1) vs. Jacob Thrall (6-2-1) (Featherweight)

Thrall caught a single leg early, although Gomes was able to stop a takedown attempt after backing up against the cage. A side kick from Gomes to the body dropped Thrall, although he was quick to get up. Thrall shot for a takedown, with Gomes landing elbows to the head while resisting. Gomes tried for a throw takedown but ended up landing on his back on the ground. The elbows to Thrall’s head seemingly cut him open, as he bled heavily while on the ground. Gomes tried for a triangle choke from the bottom position. Thrall slammed Gomes down a few times to escape the choke. Gomes was able to sweep and take top position with a minute and a half left in the round. On his feet, Gomes was able to score some hammerfist punches to the head of Thrall. After being hit with some upkicks, Gomes went back down in full guard. They got to their feet where Gomes took the back of Thrall. They left a clinch before the round ended.

A striking battle early in the second round came to a stop after Thrall was kneed in the groin. After a long break, Thrall had an explosive start. After landing a series of punches, Thrall failed to land a takedown. Thrall shot for another takedown after Gomes connected with some punches. Gomes threw Thrall down while trying for a kimura. He let the hold go eventually, staying in side control after. Gomes went to his feet to throw punches. The upkicks from Thrall connected again from the position. They went to the feet with half of the round to go. Gomes came forward with punches on the feet again. Thrall tried for a takedown from a body lock, however, Gomes was able to go against the cage and stay on the feet. Thrall eventually got a takedown with less than a minute to work. They stayed in the position until the round ended.

Thrall landed an overhand right early in the third round, trying for a takedown again after. They went down with Gomes trying for the kimura again. Gomes was on the back of Thrall in a crucifix position. Gomes moved into fill mount on top. He tried for an arm triangle choke from the position but Thrall slipped out. Gomes moved into half guard where he stayed for the rest of the fight. Going to the scorecards, Gomes won (30-27, 30-27 & 30-26).

Bout 5: Kevin Natividad (8-1) vs. Kyle Estrada (10-5) (Bantamweight)

Both fighters connected with punches and kicks early on in the fight. Natividad shot for a takedown early, with Estrada stopping it. He stopped another a minute later. Estrada threw a large amount of leg kicks in the round. Natividad was walking down Estrada while playing a counter-puncher role. They went into a clinch with two minutes to go after Natividad tried again for a takedown. Estrada lande a hard elbow to the head while Natividad held a leg of his. Natividad scored with an elbow to the head before they left the clinch. Nativdad connected with a two-punch combination near the end of the round.

A close striking battle in the opening minutes ended after Natividad connected with a right uppercut that dropped Estrada, knocking him out.

Bout 6: Sam Hughes (4-0) vs. Vanessa Demopoulos (4-1) (Vacant LFA Strawweight Championship)

Hughes had a quick start, running toward Demopoulos to start. They both threw a near even amount of strikes early on. Hughes landed a perfectly timed counter-right hand halfway through the round, although Demopoulos did not look hurt from it. Demopolous caught a leg kick, trying for a guillotine choke on the fight after. She landed some knees while holding the choke before letting it go. A close striking battle near the end hand a standout moment from Demopolous, who landed a counter-hook to Hughes’ head.

Demopoulos landed numerous leg kicks to start the second round. Hughes came in for a clinch in the second minute, that made its way to the fence. They separated a minute later. Demopoulos took turns with landing their combinations halfway through the round. Hughes caught a leg kick and dumped Demopoulos in the final minute. Immediately after landing, Demopoulos tried for a leg lock but didn’t get it. Hughes escaped the hold and went into full guard on top. Demopoulos landed an upkick in the closing moments, however, Hughes was on her knees, making it a grounded strike. Hughes was deducted a point for the kick.

Hughes had Demopoulos backed up against the cage in the third round while nailing her with punches. They clinched up where Hughes landed a knee before they split up. Hughes had Demopoulos bleeding from the nose due to strikes.

Demopoulos started the fourth round by charging forward with punches. Hughes weathered the storm, putting Demopoulos in a clinch after. Hughes got on the back of Demopoulos on the feet, being able to get a takedown in half guard after. Demopoulos tried for a reverse triangle choke from the bottom to Hughes who was on her knees. She kept the choke in until Hughes went out cold, ending the fight.
