In the main event of UFC’s “Fight Night” on Saturday, undefeated middleweight Edmen Shahbazyan fought Derek Brunson. Here’s how the three-round fight went.
Bout 8: Derek Brunson (20-7) vs. Edmen Shahbazyan (11-0) (Middleweight)
Brunson got a takedown in the second minute of the fight, getting on the back of Shahbazyan shortly after. They got up in a clinch halfway through the round, with Brunson landing an elbow before they separated. They traded hard punches on the fett, with hooks from Shahbazyan hurting Brunson.Brunson did a short clinch after ducking a punch from Shahbazyan. Brunson put Shahbazyan in a clinch against the cage with a minute to go. The close striking battle continued in the final minute, where both fighters had moments.
Brunson tried for a single leg takedown in the first minute of the second round, going down for a moment before Shahbazyan sprung back up. A pause came in the round after Shahbazyan was poked in the eye. After landing with lots of punches on the feet, Brunson got a takedown with a minute-and-a-half to go in the fight. Brunson went into full mount, unleashing ground and pound. Slowly going into half guard, Brunson continued with hard punches until the round ended. During the exchange, Shahbazyan had his arms down at his waist during the strikes. One of the last shots to Shahbazyan cut him open.
Brunson got a takedown early in the round, getting onto the back and throwing punches. After only a few punches, the referee ended the fight.
