Ranked welterweight Rafael dos Anjos will bump back down to lightweight in October, facing Islam Makhachev at UFC 254. First reported by Chris Taylor of BJPenn.com, the fight will be dos Anjos’ first at 155-pounds since 2016.
Dos Anjos found himself in a slump in welterweight recently, having lost four of his past five bouts at the weight class. Albeit one loss came to then-interim champion Colby Covington and now-UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman, recent decision losses were dropped to lower ranked names like Leon Edwards and Michael Chiesa.
Dos Anjos left the lightweight division in 2016 following consecutive losses to Eddie Alvarez and Tony Ferguson.
Makhachev presents a problem for dos Anjos, as the lightweight fighter has won his last six fights in the UFC. While Makhachev is on a streak, he will come off his longest layoff since joining the UFC, as his last bout was a win in September of 2019.
