Saturday’s main event saw Michelle Waterson and Angela Hill compete in a five-round battle. Here’s how the competition went.
Bout 12: Michelle Waterson (17-8) vs. Angela Hill (12-8) (Strawweight)
Hill landed a right hand early in the first round. Waterson failed to get a takedown in the first minute. Hill connected with an overhand right later in the first minute. Waterson clinched up with Hill in the second minute of the fight. Hill continued to connect with punches on the feet when they left the clinch. Another takedown attempt from Waterson was stopped in the third minute. Waterson nearly got a takedown from a body lock in the fourth minute, although Hill was able to stay on the feet. Waterson landed a front kick to the body in the final minute. Hill put Waterson against the cage in a clinch in the final minute.
Waterson landed a few solid strikes early in the second round. A small amount of swelling started on the left side of Waterson’s head in the first round. A right hand in the third minute wobbled Waterson. Hill stopped a takedown attempt in the fourth minute of the fight.
Waterson’s nose started to bleed in the third round. Hill came forward and landed a knee in the second minute of the third round. Waterson caught her after the knee, landing a takedown from a clinch. Waterson held half guard for roughly two minutes. She was able to step into full mount for a moment in the fourth round. Waterson kept half guard until the third round ran out of time. Hill landed an accidental upkick near the end of the round, hitting Waterson in the head while she was still on her knees.
Waterson tried for a takedown early in the fourth round, although Hill was able to stop it. They went into a clinch against the fence after an exchange of strikes. Waterson tried again for a takedown in the fourth minute of the round, although she was only able to get Hill to her knees before she stood back up. The sidekick, a kick that Waterson threw many times in the fight, connected clean to the chin of Hill in the final minute of the round. Waterson left a clinch with a punch and kick combination to end the round.
Waterson opened the final round active with strikes. Waterson had a single leg takedown stopped in the first minute of the round. The fighters were seemingly taking turns putting together combinations of punches in the round. Waterson had another takedown stopped in the fourth round. Hill connected with a clean right hand in the final minute as part of an exchange between the fighters. Waterson landed a teep kick to the head. Hill went into a clinch in the closing moments where she landed knees to the body. Needing judges to find a winner, the fight went to scorecards. A split decision favoured Waterson (48-47 Hill, 49-46 Waterson & 48-47 Waterson).
