Invicta FC 42: Cummins vs. Zappitella Play-by-Play

Play-by-Play:

Bout 1: Jennifer Chieng (1-0) vs. Helen Peralta (2-1) (Catchweight 120 lbs)

Peralta landed leg kicks to start the fight. Cheing initiated a clinch, although Peralta was able to put her against the cage from the clinch. Peralta landed a punch while leaving the clinch in the second minute of the round. Peralta clinched again with Chieng after landing a few more punches. She got a takedown from the clinch in the fourth minute of the round. Peralta threw some punches from full guard. The fight went back to the feet for the final moments of the round.

The fight went into a clinch again early in the second round, with Peralta putting Chieng against the cage. Peralta kept Chieng against the cage for month of the round. She let go for a moment in the final minute of the round to land punches. Peralta scored a takedown to Chieng just before the round concluded.

Like the round before, Peralta was quick to put Chieng against the cage in a clinch. Chieng was kept against the cage until the final moments of the round, where Peralta separated and let some punches go. Peralta got the win after three rounds (30-26, 30-27 & 30-27).

Bout 2: Victoria Leonardo (6-2) vs. Liz Tracy (5-3) (Flyweight)

Leonardo landed a front kick to the head to open the fight. She put Tracy against the cage in a clinch shortly after. Tracy landed a knee to the body in the clinch before they returned to stand-up. Leonardo landed a jab to the head while backing up in the third minute of the round. Both fighters had a fairly high output of strikes. Tracy was connecting with more of her punches in the second half of the round. Tracy shot for a takedown after landing a punch in the fourth minute of the round. They went back to striking after being in the clinch. Tracy got a takedown in the final minute of the round, getting full guard on top. Leonardo was able to get on top before they returned to the feet.

Leonardo connected with a head kick in the first minute of the second round. Tracy got a takedown in the third minute of the fight, although Leonardo was able to get up moments after. Leonardo put a body lock on the back of Tracy on the feet. Leonardo got a takedown from a body lock moments later. Tracy tried for a heel hook from the bottom that Leonardo escaped, going back to the feet in the process. Leonardo failed to secured a takedown in the fourth minute of the bout. Tracy finished the round strong, coming forward and connecting with a few punches.

Both fighters connected with hard punches early in the third round. Leonardo landed a clean two-punch combination in the second minute of the round. Tracy was connecting frequently with her jab. Leonardo got a takedown in the third minute of the round after trying for a few moments. Tracy got back to her feet almost immediately. Tracy spent the final minutes of the round pressing forward with punches. Leonardo was given the win following three rounds of action (29-28, 29-28 & 29-28).

Bout 3: Jessica Delboni (9-2) vs. Herica Tiburcio (11-4) (Strawweight)

Delboni put together combinations of punches while walking Tiburcio down in the first round. Delboni put Tiburcio against the cage for a moment in the fourth minute of the round.

Delboni stopped a takedown attempt in the opening minute of the second round. Tiburcio was able to land a series of knees in a clinch. Like the round before, Delboni was the better striker, coming forward for the majority of the round.

Tiburcio connected with a right hand early in the third round. Tiburcio was the more aggressive fighter in the final round, charging forward and landing more punches. She put Delboni against the cage in a clinch in the third minute of the round. The fight returned to striking with two minutes to go. Both fighters threw some wild punches as the fight ran out of time. Tiburcio tried for a takedown that Delboni stopped in the final moments. The fight needed judges to find a winner, with all three choosing Delboni (30-27, 30-27 & 29-28).

Bout 4: Lisa Verzosa (5-1) vs. Raquel Canuto (6-6) (Bantamweight)

Verzosa had a slow start in the fight, spending the majority of the round on her backfoot while Canuta came forward with punches. Verzosa was able to land her shots, however, putting a visible amount of damage around the nose of Canuto. 

Verzosa was connecting with more of her punches in the second round of the fight. Canuto’s pace of strike seemingly slowed down in the round.

Canuto tried for a takedown a couple times early in the third round, being denied by Verzosa on every attempt. While Canuto wasn’t able to land her numerous takedown attempts later on the feet, she was landing a fair amount of punches to the head and leg kicks. Verzosa got the win after three rounds (29-28 Canuto, 29-28 Verzosa & 29-28 Canuto).

Bout 5: Ashley Cummins (7-5) vs. Alesha Zappitella (7-2) (Vacant Invicta FC Atomweight Championship)

Cummins connected with a right hand in the second minute of the fight that hurt Zappitella. She was able to recover from the punch, staying on her backfoot after. Zappitella tried for a takedown in the fourth minute of the fight that Cummins was able to stop. Zappitella got a takedown later in the minute, although Cummins tried for a choke from the bottom. Zappitella escaped the choke, getting half guard after. She held the position until the round concluded.

Cummins stunned Zappitella with a right hand while backing up early in the second round. They clinched up after. Cummins landed a clean counter-right hand in the fourth minute of the fight. Cummins was able to keep a takedown attempt from Zappitella to a clinch with a minute left. Cummins connected with a right cross while Zappitella landed a leg kick.

Cummins stopped a takedown attempt to start the third round. Zappitella was able to get a single leg takedown 30 seconds into the round. Zappitella went into half guard, moving into half guard in the third minute of the round. Zappitella landed some elbows to the head from the position. Cummins got back to her feet with 20 seconds left in the round. She escaped the clinch of Zappitella just before the round concluded.

Zappitella was able to get another takedown a minute into the fourth round. Cummins tried for a guillotine choke from the bottom, although Zappitella eventually put in a von flue choke from the position. Zappitella kept a hold of the choke until Cummins tapped out, ending the fight.
