UFC on ESPN+ 40: Claudia Gadelha vs. Yan Xiaonan Play-by-Play

Rising strawweight Yan Xiaonan was paired with Claudia Gadelha to start Saturday’s UFC main card. Their fight went like this.

Bout 6: Claudia Gadelha (18-4) vs. Yan Xiaonan (12-1) (Strawweight)

A jab from Gadelha backed Yan up early. She moved forward for a body lock, getting a takedown from the position moments after. Yan remained active with strikes from the bottom. The fighters went back to the feet, where Gadelha kept Yan against the cage in a clinch. The referee eventually separated them from the clinch due to inactivity. Gadelha caught a leg kick for a single leg takedown in the final minute of the round.

Both fighters connected with a high volume of punches in the second round. Yan’s fast hands helped her connect frequently. Yan clinched with Gadelha after stopping a takedown late in the round.

Gadelha was quick to put Yan against the cage in a body lock to start the third round. While Yan was able to escape the clinch in the second minute, Gadelha was quick to put her back in that position again. They were separated due to inactivity with a minute left in the fight. Yan continued to land strikes, marking up the face of Gadelha as the round ran out of time. Needing judges to find a winner, Yan was chosen (29-28, 29-28 & 29-28).

RESULT: Yan Xiaonan def. Claudia Gadelha via Decision, Unanimous
