CFFC 90: Huckbody vs. Phillips Play-by-Play

Play-by-Play:

Bout 1: Timothy Cuamba (0-0) vs. Joshua Francis (0-0) (Featherweight)

Francis was landing leg kicks early in the fight. Francis clinched with Cuamba late in the first minute of the round. Francis looked for a choke as the fight went down to the knees for a moment. Back up to the feet, Cuamba scored a clinch takedown, taking the back of Francis after. Cuamba landed a few punches from the back before switching into half guard on top. He was moved into full guard, where he continued with hammerfist strikes. Moving into side control, Cuamba landed a high volume of punches. Back in full guard, Cuamba continued with punches, causing Francis to be warned to fight back. The referee stepped in and stopped the fight with a minute left.

Bout 2: Cedric Gunnison (1-0) vs. Nick Olson (0-0) (Welterweight)

Olson connected with a few leg kicks early in the fight. Gunnison caught a leg kick to clinch with Olson in the first minute. Gunnison landed knees to the body while putting Olson against the cage. He scored a takedown in the second minute of the round. Gunnison got up, landing kicks to the legs of Olson before he stood back up as well. The fighters started to trade combinations on the feet in the third minute of action. Gunnison clinched with Olson against the cage, tossing him down for a takedown after. Olson attempted an armbar from the bottom that Gunnison escaped quickly. Olson was able to escape the position on the ground and clinch with Gunnison. Both fighters were connecting with back-and-forth punches in the final minute of the round. Olson put together a couple of punches and a head kick before the round concluded.

There was an extended break between the first and second round due to cleaning up ice that spilled in the ring. Olson charged at Gunnison, shooting for a takedown after throwing a few kicks. Olson went down in half guard while attempting a guillotine choke. Olson eventually tapped out, ending the fight.

Bout 3: Turpal Khamzayev (2-3) vs. Chaka Worthy (3-2) (Bantamweight)

Worthy landed a left hook that seemingly wobbled Khamzayev for a moment. Khamzayev caught a leg kick in the second minute to dump Worthy to the ground. Worthy was quick to return to his feet. Khamzayev was missing with a lot of strikes, although Worthy wasn’t answering back much – this was something his corner was criticizing him for. Worthy stopped a takedown attempt before the round ran out of time.

The fast-paced battle on the feet resumed in the second round. A pause came in the third minute of the fight due to a kick hitting Khamzayev in the groin. Worthy was putting together the better striking in the second round, often connecting with counter-punches after Khamzayev would miss with one shot. Khamzayev scored a takedown in the final minute of the round, taking full guard on top before the round ran out of time.

The striking slowed down in the final round. Worthy landed a clean left cross in the fourth minute of the round. Khamzayev landed a head kick in the fourth minute of the round. Worthy stopped a takedown attempt, keeping the fight on the feet. Worthy connected with a body shot in the final moments of the fight. Needing judges to find a winner, Khamzayev picked up a split decision win(29-28 Khamzayev, 29-28 Worthy & 29-28 Khamzayev).

Bout 4: Kasey Tanner (3-0) vs. Calvin Harbaugh (2-2) (Bantamweight)

Harbaugh shot for a takedown in the third minute of the round. Tanner backed up against the cage to resist the attempt. Tanner was able to score his own takedown from the clinch eventually. Tanner landed some strikes from half guard. Tanner continued with punches from full guard until Harbaugh escaped the position in the final minute. Tanner was able to take side control, looking for an americana from the position. Harbaugh escaped the attempt, returning to the feet for the final 10 seconds of the round.

Tanner was landing loud leg kicks early in the second round. Tanner scored a double leg takedown in the second minute of the round. Harbaugh looked for an armbar quickly while on his back. Tanner escaped eventually, getting into side control after. Tanner took the back of Harbaugh in the third minute, landing punches from the position. Flattening him out, Tanner continued with punches. He started throwing more elbows and punches after looking for a rear naked choke for a moment. The referee eventually stopped the fight.

Bout 5: Matar Lo (3-2) vs. Joseph Marino (3-1) (Catchweight 150 lbs)

A leg kick dropped Lo immediately. He got up right after, being pressed against the cage by Marino. Lo landed a takedown from the clinch, taking the back of Marino as he stood up. Lo was taken off of Marinos’ back within a minute. Marino shot for a takedown, scoring it in the second minute of the round. Marino stood up, landing hammerfist strikes from the position. Marino continued with strikes on top until the round ran out of time.

Lo landed a punch in the second minute that knocked the mouthpiece of Marino out. Marino clinched with Lo against the cage in the third minute of action. Marino slammed Lo down for a takedown in the fourth minute. Marino kept full guard on top until the round concluded. Lo looked for a possible triangle choke from the bottom just before the round expired.

Lo looked like the fresher fighter on the feet early in the third round. Marino looked for a takedown in the third round. The fight went down in the second minute of the round after Lo pulled guard. Lo was able to sweep Marino in the final minute of the round, looking for a d’arce choke after. Lo lost the choke, taking the back of Marino after. Working up to his feet, Marino put Lo against the cage. Lo got on the back of Marino, mounting his back and taking him down before the round ran out of time. Marino won via split decision after three rounds (29-28 Marino, 29-28 Lo & 30-27 Marino).

Bout 6: Nah-shon Burrell (16-11) vs. Moses Murrietta (8-4) (Middleweight)

Burrell landed a hard right hand in the opening minute of the fight. Burrell was connecting with hooks early in the fight. A cut opened beside the right eye of Murrietta in the second minute of action. Burrell landed a hard left hook in the third minute. Burrell threw a combination in the third minute that included a left hook that dropped Murrietta, ending the fight.

Bout 7: Zulkarnaiyn Kamchybekov (3-1) vs. Richard Brooks (5-1) (Lightweight)

Kamchybekov looked for a takedown, grabbing a leg of Brooks early. He landed punches while holding the leg. Not getting the takedown, Kamchybekov clinched with Brooks. Brooks was kneed in the groin accidentally, causing the fight to pause for a moment. Brooks scored a takedown in the second minute. Kamchybekov looked for a rear naked choke after Brooks returned to the feet. The fight went back down while Kamchybekov continued to hold the choke. Brooks was able to escape the choke, getting to his feet eventually to score a takedown of his own. Brooks looked for guillotine choke while on the feet. Kamchybekov escaped the choke, taking the fight back to striking. Brooks half a body lock on Kamchybekov in the closing moments of the round.

Kamchybekov connected with a few punches and a head kick early in the first round that seemingly wobbled Brooks. Brooks was rocked by a left and right hook in the second minute. Kamchybekov followed-up with a right cross that knocked Brooks out, ending the fight and giving Kamchybekov a walk-off win.

Bout 8: Aaron Phillips (5-1) vs. Collin Huckbody (8-2) (Vacant CFFC Middleweight Championship)

Huckbody scored a takedown in the second minute of action. Phillips worked up to his feet, although Huckbody remained on him with a body lock. Both fighters were landing leg kicks and punches that were doing damage in the first round.

The first half of the second round saw the fighters compete in a slow-paced striking battle. Huckbody had the sharper strikes, often putting together punches. Phillips put Huckbody against the cage in a clinch for a moment in the third minute of the round. Phillips looked tired in the second round, putting his hands on his knees at one moment. Huckbody landed a head kick that dropped Phillips late in the round. He landed a few punches before the referee stopped the fight.
