Coming off their large annual New Year’s Eve event, RIZIN is eyeing a potentially even bigger event on March 14th at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan. The promotion announced the location and date for RIZIN 27 during RIZIN 26 on Thursday.
Tokyo Dome has held dozens of large concerts in the past and is the home of the NPB Yomiuri Giants baseball team. Pro wrestling promotion NJPW holds an annual “Wrestle Kingdom” event at the venue every January.
MMA events have been held at the Tokyo Dome in the past. Notably, Pride FC held seven events at the venue during their run from 1997 to 2007.
The Tokyo Dome holds a capacity of 40,000 to 50,000, although the number of attendees would presumably be limited in March due to COVID-19 restrictions.
RIZIN has yet to hold an event in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. The majority of the promotion’s events so far have taken place in the city of Saitama, which is less than an hour away from Tokyo via transit.
With their next event in mid-March, RIZIN will take a two-and-a-half-month break from events. The break comes after a busy return in the second half of 2020, which saw them hold five events in five months.
