Belal Muhammad is scheduled to take a short-notice main event fight against Leon Edwards at UFC’s March 13th event, taking the place of Khamzat Chimaev. Brett Okamoto of ESPN reported the matchup on Thursday.
The new main event is scheduled to headline a “Fight Night” card from the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
Muhammad is filling the spot of Chimaev, who withdrew from the fight due to his ongoing battle with the long-term effects of contracting COVID-19. The new matchup sees UFC ditch the plan of a fight between Edwards and Chimaev, a pairing that they attempted to place on three cards from December to March.
Muhammad is taking his next fight shortly after he earned a decision victory over Dhiego Lima at UFC 258 earlier this month. Muhammad is currently on a four-fight win streak that he has developed over the past two years.
The bout will be Muhammad’s first in the main event slot of a UFC card. He last fought beyond three rounds when competing on the regional MMA scene in 2016.
Now with a new booking, Edwards will be wagering his eight-fight win streak that he has been adding onto since 2016. He will be returning after over a year outside of the cage, as numerous fights have fallen through and left him without fights in recent months.
Now with a new main event, here is how UFC’s March 13th event looks.
