The UFC debut of Rafael Alves has been removed from Saturday’s UFC card after the promotional newcomer missed weight greatly for his featherweight bout. Alves came in at 157.5 pounds on Friday, missing the non-championship featherweight limit by 11.5 pounds.
Alves was set to face fellow UFC debutant Pat Sabatini. The bout was scheduled to take place during the prelims of a “Fight Night” card at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
Alves took to Instagram after the incident, mentioning that he was ill during his weight cut.
Alves, a former interim Titan FC Lightweight Champion, earned his UFC contract in 2020, defeating Alejandro Flores on “Dana White’s Contender Series.”
Alves was originally scheduled to face Mike Trizano on Saturday, although he was later replaced by Sabatini due to an injury.
UFC’s card still has a total of 14 fights placed in the lineup. The main event of the card will see heavyweights Curtis Blaydes and Derrick Lewis face off.
