Bellator Roundup: Three Last-Minute Changes Made To Bellator 258

Bellator’s May 7th card has received three last-minute changes, including a new entrant into the promotion’s Light Heavyweight Grand Prix. The new matches are set to happen at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, USA.

Johnson Gets New Grand Prix Opponent

Anthony Johnson’s Bellator Light Heavyweight Grand Prix fight will stay on the card, as he has been matched against a short-notice opponent in Jose Augusto Azevedo Barros. News of the new opponent was first reported by Ariel Helwani of ESPN.

Johnson was first set to fight Yoel Romero in the opening round of the tournament. That plan was abruptly cancelled last week, as it was reported that Romero did not pass his pre-fight medical tests.

Azevedo won his Bellator debut last month, submitting Jonathan Wilson within a round with an arm triangle choke.

The fight will be Johnson’s return to the cage after being inactive since 2017.

Carvalho To Make Return To Bellator Against Larkin

Rafael Carvalho has re-joined the Bellator roster to face Lorenz Larkin at Friday’s card, as announced by the promotion on Saturday. Carvalho steps in to replace Costello van Steenis, who departed the Bellator 258 lineup last week.

Carvalho was reportedly cut by Bellator in October, along with over a dozen other fighters. He was set to compete on an LFA card later this month, although he was later pulled from the card to take the fight in Bellator.

Morales Steps In To Face Mix

Former UFC fighter Albert Morales will make his return to Bellator when facing Patchy Mix on Friday, per a report from Nolan King of MMA Junkie earlier in the week.

Morales was booked for the lineup after the original opponent for Mix, James Gallagher, was pulled from the lineup. Morales will be competing in Bellator for the first time since 2015.

Mix will be returning after losing a fight for Bellator’s vacant bantamweight belt last year against Juan Archuleta.

A title fight between Juan Archuleta and Sergio Pettis is currently set to headline Bellator’s card on Friday. Here is how the lineup looks with the new additions.
