Former GLORY Kickboxing Champion Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong earned a close split decision win over Tawanchai PK.Saenchaimuaythaigym in the main event of ONE Championship’s pre-taped “Battleground” card on Friday.
The event, which happened in late July at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore, aired for the first time on Friday morning.
The close three-round bout saw both fighters have a high output of strikes, making it a tough bout to score. Sitthichai was frequently advancing on Tawanchai, often throwing combinations of straight punches or hooks to the head.
Tawanchai was active with kicks and knees to the body.
Sitthichai was making his first appearance under ONE Championship’s Muay Thai rules. He had previously fought once for them in a kickboxing bout, losing to Superbom Banchamek in 2020.
The former GLORY Lightweight Champion mentioned in his post-fight interview that he intends to go after a kickboxing bout in ONE Championship.
Tawanchai was coming off a successful promotional debut earlier this year. The Muay Thai veteran stopped Sean Clancy with a head kick at “Dangal,” which aired in May.
Dejdamrong Finishes ONE Newcomer Banma
ONE veteran Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke spoiled the promotional debut of Banma Douji in the co-main event, making a comeback to finish him in the second round with strikes.
Dejdamrong dropped Banma in the second round with a series of elbows. After landing knees and another punch to a downed Banma, the referee stopped Dejdamrong and gave him the TKO victory.
The bout was a scrappy striking battle in the first round, with both fighters scoring with clean shots.
Banma was making his ONE debut after a 14-fight run from 2016 to 2019 that included 13 finish victories.
Dejdamrong is now back into the win column, with his previous appearance being a split decision loss to Hexigetu.
Xie Continues Win Streak With Win Over Kim
Xie Wei’s damaging body shots earned him a walk-off finish win, defeating Kim Dae Hwan in the third round.
Xie was able to fold Kim in the third round with a left hook to the body, causing the referee to step in and end the bout.
Xie’s striking also hurt Kim earlier in the fight. A left hook also caused a knockdown late in the second round, as Xie connected clean to the head.
Xie is now on a three-fight winning streak of finish victories in ONE.
Kim has fallen to a long four-fight losing streak in ONE Championship. His last win dates back to 2019.
Olsim Takes Decision Win Over ONE Vet Nguyen
Jenelyn Olsim advanced her win streak to two consecutive with a unanimous decision win over Bi Nguyen.
The close fight saw Olsim start strong, with Nguyen having a good closing roung.
Olsim opened the fight well, scoring takedowns and using positions ont he ground to attempt submissions. Olsim was also seemingly able to score a flash knockdown in the second round with punches.
The last round was easily Nguyen’s best, as she lead the striking exchanges and scored two takedowns.
Olsim will now presumably appear at ONE Championship’s September 3rd show in an alternate bout for the promotion’s strawweight tournament. A slot against Grace Cleveland on the card was previously billed to either get filled by Nguyen or Olsim, implying the result of their fight would determine who gets the match.
Olsim won her ONE flagship debut earlier this year, submitting Maira Mazar.
Nguyen was coming off an upset victory she earned over Ritu Phogat months ago.
Jong Prevails In Tough Battle, Hands Thang First Loss
Song Min Jong handed Tial Thang his first pro loss on Friday, defeating him via unanimous decision after a close three-round battle.
Thang had his moments in the MMA bout, although it was striking damage, wrestling and submission attempts that earned Song the win.
Thang showcased his striking skills early in the first round. Song closed the round out well, earning a takedown and unloading with ground and pound while on top.
A significant amount of swelling became visible under the left eye of Thang following the first round.
The fight continued to be a back-and-forth battle in the second and third rounds, as both fighters scored takedowns and connected with shots on the ground.
Song had a strong finish to the fight, reversing a position on the ground and taking the back of Thang for a rear naked choke attempt. While he wasn’t able to get the choke under the chin of Thang, he was able to keep a hold of it until the round expired.
The victory put Song back into the win column after losing to Geje Eustaquio last year.
Thang entered Friday on a three-fight win streak. His three previous pro fights all took place in ONE, including a stoppage win he earned over Paul Lumihi earlier this year.
Otgonjargal Takes ONE Debut In 49 Seconds
The card kicked off with a bang, as Mongolian newcomer Purev Otgonjargal took out Ben Royle within a minute.
Royle was dropped early in the fight with a right hook. Capitalizing on this, Otgonjargal then went down and landed shots in full guard that were not being defended.
The quick finish extended Otgonjargal’s winning streak to seven consecutive. The fight was his first stoppage win due to strikes, with all of his previous wins coming via submission.
Royle won his ONE Championship debut in his previous fight, defeating Quitin Thomas in 2020.
