Jessica Andrade scored a quick win in her return to the strawweight division on Saturday night, catching Amanda Lemos early with a standing arm triangle choke.
Andrade’s win headlined a UFC “Fight Night” card from the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
Andrade slipped in an arm triangle choke against Lemos while in a clinch position on the feet. This caused a sudden end to their fight in just the first round of what was scheduled to go up to five rounds in total.
Andrade, a former UFC Strawweight Champion, was coming back to the division after a run up at flyweight. She notably challenged 125-pound champion Valentina Shevchenko last year, getting stopped in the second round of a bout.
Andrade is now on a two-fight winning streak. Her previous victory was a first-round finish win against Cynthia Calvillo.
Lemos had her strong climb up the strawweight division broken with Saturday’s outcome. She had a five-fight winning streak from 2019 to 2021, including three victories via finish. Her last win was in late 2021 when she scored a split decision victory over Angela Hill.
Saturday was the first time that Lemos appeared in the main event of a UFC card.
Puelles Catches Guida Early With Kneebar
Claudio Puelles kept his winning streak going in Saturday night’s co-main event with a kneebar submission against Clay Guida.
Puelles suddenly caught Guida with a kneebar in the first round while on his back. With the hold fully extended, Guida was forced to tap and end the fight.
Puelles searched for submissions earlier in the fight, attempting an armbar at one point.
Puelles is now on a five-fight winning streak that includes three kneebar submissions. His previous fight ended that way as well, catching Chris Gruetzemacher with the hold in a late 2021 fight.
Guida was coming off a submission win that scored against Leonardo Santos via rear naked choke.
Barber Gets Nod Against De La Rosa
Maycee Barber picked up a unanimous decision win over Montana De La Rosa as part of Saturday’s main card.
Barber’s victory came from her ability to utilize clinch and ground positions, where the majority of the fight took place. She took De La Rosa down a few times in the bout, using these positions to remain active with punches.
Barber snapped a two-fight losing streak in her previous bout, defeating Miranda Maverick last year.
De La Rosa was coming off a finish victory against Ariane Lipski.
Jourdain Submits Vannata Early For Second Consecutive Win
Charles Jourdain had an early finish against Lando Vannata, dropping him with a punch and then submitting him on the ground.
Jourdain floored Vannata early with a straight left punch. On the ground, he searched for a guillotine choke. After attempting the submission with just one arm, Jourdain got his second arm into the hold before a tap came from Vannata.
Jourdain is now on a two-fight winning streak for the first time since he joined the UFC roster in 2019. His previous victory was a dominant striking performance against Andre Ewell late last year.
Vannata was coming off a split decision win against Mike Grundy from last year.
Barriault Scores First Submission Win Against Right
Marc-Andre Barriault scored his first-ever submission win on Saturday night, catching Jordan Wright in the first round with a guillotine choke.
Barriault earned a first found the guillotine choke against Wright while in a clinch position on the feet. He dropped to the canvas with this submission attempt, moving into full mount before a tap came from Wright.
Barriault took a 16-second loss in his previous fight, getting stopped in February by Chidi Njokuani.
Wright was also coming off a finish loss, getting stopped by Bruno Silva in December 2021. He has yet to go into the third round of a pro fight.
Both fighters usually compete at middleweight, but their appearances this weekend took place at a catchweight of 190 pounds.
The Rest of the Card
Saturday’s main card lost a heavyweight fight between undefeated Alexandr Romanov and short-notice opponent Chase Sherman. The announcement of the canceled bout was during the preliminary card broadcast.
Sergey Khandozhko put an end to his hectic stand-up battle against Dwight Grant in the second round, stopping him with an overhand left.
Tyson Pedro won in his first appearance since 2018, out-landing Ike Villanueva and stopping him late in the first round with strikes.
Aoriqileng snapped a two-fight skid and earned his first UFC victory on Saturday night, finishing Cameron Else in the first round with ground and pound shots. Else has now lost two consecutive fights since joining the UFC in 2020.
Preston Parsons scored his first UFC win on Saturday night, handing tough short-notice opponent Evan Elder a loss via unanimous decision. Elder was making his UFC debut and took his first pro defeat in the bout.
2018 PFL Heavyweight Champion Philipe Lins scored his first UFC victory on Saturday night, defeating Marcin Prachnio via unanimous decision in a light heavyweight bout.
Dean Barry’s UFC debut turned sour, as an eye poke to opponent Mike Jackson forced the bout to end in the first round. Since it was ruled as an intentional foul, Jackson was given his first pro win.
