Full Card For UFC 249 Announced

The full lineup for the May 9th version of UFC 249 was released on Saturday. The lineup includes two championship fights, including the UFC interim lightweight championship and the bantamweight championship.

The venue for the event has been announced as the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. Along with this event, UFC has announced shows for May 16th and 23rd.

The Championship Fights

Main eventing the card, Tony Ferguson will fight Justin Gaethje for the UFC Lightweight Championship. The first UFC 249 saw Ferguson fight UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, however, he was taken off the card due to travel restrictions.

In the co-main event of the card, UFC Bantamweight Champion Henry Cejudo will put his belt on the line for the first time, facing Dominick Cruz. It’s been over three years since the last fight from Cruz, as he has been riddled by injuries since.

The New Matchups

Out of the 12 matchups, half of them are new bookings that werent placed on older iterations of UFC 249.

All of the new matchups are on the preliminary card. Headlining the prelims, a rematch between Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis is set. In 2013, Pettis won their first meeting, winning via stoppage halfway through the round.

In a heavyweight matchup, Fabricio Werdum has been booked to fight Alexey Oleinik. Werdum is coming off a long layoff, last fighting in early 2018.

The only women’s fight on the card sees Carla Esparza fight fellow strawweight Michelle Waterson. The original UFC 249 card was supposed to see former strawweight champions Jessica Andrade and Rose Namajunas fight in a rematch, however the matchup was not included on this card.

The final newly announced matchup was between Charles Rosa and undefeated Bryce Mitchell.

More Rebooked Matchups

The five-fight main card includes all pre-booked matchups apart from the bantamweight championship matchup. Francis Ngannou and undefeated heavyweight Jairzinho Rozenstruick are set to battle before the title fights. They were originally meant to headline a fight night card before COVID-19 forced the show to be cancelled.

Also on the main card, featherweights Jeremy Stephens and Calvin Kattar will meet. Both fighters come into this fight trying to bounce back from a loss.

The first fight on the main card has undefeated Yorgan De Castro go up against Greg Hardy.

The preliminary card is set to happen on ESPN, with the main card happening through pay-per-view.
