Being a short notice replacement fighter for Mike Davis, Irwin Rivera made his UFC debut on the prelims against Giga Chikadze. Here’s how the featherweight contest panned out.
Bout 4: Giga Chikadze (9-2) vs. Irwin Rivera (9-4) (Featherweight)
Right off the bat it became clear that Chikadze had a height advantage over Rivera. Rivera was coming forward with fast punches early. Rivera had a takedown attempt stopped halfway through the round. Chikadze was landing good body kicks, sometimes countering combinations with it. Rivera’s pace slowed down near the end of the round.
The kicks from Chikadze continued to be the best part of his arsenal. The slowed down pace of Rivera played into the patient counter-striking style of Chikadze.
Rivera was dropped by a knee to the head to start the third round. Rivera was thrown down, hit with some ground and pound before they got back up. While it was at kickboxing clinic for Chikadze in the third round, Rivera was still the fighter coming forward more often. With just over a minute to go in the round, Chikadze stopped a takedown attempt. Chikadze picked up a win on the scorecards (30-26, 30-27 & 30-27).
