High-ranked middleweights in Jack Hermansson and Kelvin Gastelum with clash on July 18th at the still-mysterious location of “Fight Island.” First reported by Brett Okamoto of ESPN, the matchup will be the first for the 155-pound duo in 2020.
Gastelum has lost his last two fights, both decisions, with the opponents being Israel Adesanya and Darren Till. While being two consecutive losses, they came against high-ranked opponents, hence Gastelum currently sitting seventh on the UFC.com welterweight rankings.
One spot above him is Hermansson, whose four-fight winning streak was stopped last September by Jared Cannonier. “The Joker,” has been a consistent fighter since his 2016 arrival in the UFC, building a 7-3 record so far.
The fight has been announced for “Fight Island,” a location that has not been disclosed to the public so far.
Hermansson and Gastelum Join Show With Contention For Gold
UFC’s July 18th card has two other fights announced currently, presumably also being set for “Fight Island.” Headlining the show is a rematch between Deiveson Figueiredo and Joseph Benavidez, fighting for the vacant UFC Flyweight Championship.
The two flyweights fought for the weight classes vacant belt in February, although Figueiredo missing the 125-pound limit ruled him unable to capture the belt, no matter if he won or lost.
Figueiredo stopped Benavidez in the second round with strikes, however, Benavidez claims an accidental head collision contributed to the finish as well.
Here’s the entire card so far:
Bout 3: Deiveson Figueiredo (18-1) vs. Joseph Benavidez (28-6) (Vacant UFC Flyweight Championship)
Bout 2: Jack Hermansson (20-5) vs. Kelvin Gastelum (16-5) (Middleweight)
Bout 1: Alexandre Pantoja (22-4) vs. Askar Askarov (11-0-1) (Flyweight)
