Three new fights have been added to UFC’s August 1st event, including a battle between Chris Weidman and Omari Akhmedov. The event, which now has five fights attached to it, does not have a venue announced as of yet.
Chris Weidman vs. Omari Akhmedov
First reported by Igor Lazorin of TASS, Weidman and Akhmedov have been paired up for the show.
Weidman, a former UFC Middleweight Champion, will aim to get a win, after losing his last two to Jacare Souza and Dominick Reyes. Since losing his championship in 2015, Weidman has only won one, that being a win over Kelvin Gastelum in 2017.
A win for Akhmedov would mean four-in-a-row for him. In his last six fights, Akhmedov has a 5-0-1 record, with his overall UFC record being 8-3-1.
Julia Avila vs. Nicco Montano
In a rematch that has a previous fight dating back to 2017, Julia Avila and Nicco Montano will run it back in August. The fight was first announced on the Instagram of Avila.
Meeting in 2017, Avila defeated Montano via decision in regional MMA promotion “HD MMA.” Avila has had a 2-0 run in the UFC so far, including a very recent victory over Gina Mazany earlier in June.
Montano, a winner of Season 26 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” lost her most recent fight, not being favoured on the scorecards against Julianna Pena last July. She looks to rebound after over a year of a layoff in August.
Andrew Sanchez vs. Wellington Turman
First reported by Marcelo Barone of Combate, Andrew Sanchez and Wellington Turman will fight on the August card as well.
Turman made his UFC debut last July, losing via split decision to Karl Roberson. He redeemed himself in the octagon in November, winning on scorecards over Markus Perez. Turman looks for his second UFC win in November.
Sanchez has more UFC experience, having obtained a 4-3 record in the promotion. After winning season 23 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Sanchez dropped from light heavyweight to middleweight, competing there ever since. His last fight was a scorecard loss to Marvin Vettori.
The still somewhat small “Fight Night” card is headlined by Derrick Lewis and Alexey Oleinik in a five-round battle. Here’s the card in its current state:
Bout 5: Derrick Lewis (23-7) vs. Alexey Oleinik (59-13-1) (Heavyweight)
Bout 4: Sergey Pavlovich (14-1) vs. Ciryl Gane (6-0) (Heavyweight)
Bout 3: Chris Weidman (14-5) vs. Omari Akhmedov (20-4-1) (Middleweight)
Bout 2: Nicco Montano (4-3) vs. Julia Avila (8-1) (Bantamweight)
Bout 1: Andrew Sanchez (11-5) vs. Wellington Turman (16-3) (Middleweight)
