LFA 84: Gonzales vs. Childers Play-by-Play

Bout 1: Bruno Souza def. Kamuela Kirk via Decision, Split

Bout 2: Boston Salmon def. Shawn West via DQ, Illegal Knee (RD 2, 0:53)

Bout 1: Kamuela Kirk (9-3) vs. Bruno Souza (6-1) (Featherweight)

The fighters traded leg kicks in the first round. Kirk landed a knee to the body in a clinch in the second minute. Souza had a good combination after, landing a punch after throwing kicks. Kirk put Souza in a clinch against the cage with two minutes to go. Souza was the more active striker throughout, throwing teep kicks to the body and hooks to the head. Kirt connected with two punches in the last minute. After Souza tried for a takedown, Kirk got on the back of him and went to the ground before the round ended.

The second round was close with both fighters having their moments with punches. Like the round before, Kirk was walking down Souza on the feet while Souza strafed left and right. A pause came in the third minute after Souza was accidentally struck in the groin. Kirk landed a hard knee to the head in the fourth minute, following up with two punches. Another hook and knee landed for Kirk in the final minute. 

The close striking battle continued in the final round with the same pacing. Kirk landed a hard right cross with two minutes to go in the fight. The fighters traded hard hooks in the final minute. Going to the judges, Souza picked up the win (29-28 Kirk, 29-28 Souza & 29-28 Souza).

Bout 2: Shawn West (16-10) vs. Boston Salmon (6-3) (Catchweight 150 lbs)

Both fighters landed some jabs early on. West clinched up in the second minute, putting Salmon against the cage. Salmon was quick to move off the fence and separate. Salmon got his own clinch against the cage moments later. West escaped the position, and then both fighters connected with strong hooks to the head. West hurt Salmon with a punch in the third minute, although Salmon answered back with his own punch seconds after. West was chipping away at the lead leg of Salmon which started swelling. Salmon put West against the cage again with just over a minute left in the round. The referee separated them in the final few moments of the round.

Salmon landed some counter punches early in the round. West tried to shoot for a single leg takedown, with Salmon avioiding it and landing a knee to the body while exiting clinch. Both fighters traded hooks that hurt eachother. Salmon went down, and West landed a knee to the head that knocked Salmon out. Since Salmon was grounded during the knockout, he was given the win due to disqualification.

Bout 3: Kassius Kayne (11-6) vs. Maycon Mendonca (8-4) (Welterweight)

Kayne had Mendonca on the backfoot early, connecting with clean head punches. They clinched up early with Kayne against the cage. Mendonca was able to get a slam takedown from the position with three minutes to go. On the ground, Mendonca had side control. Moving into full guard, Mendonca landed strikes from above. Mendonca eventually stood up while Kayne was still on his back. Kayne got ahold of a leg in the closing moments of the round.

They clinched up to start the second round, separating shortly after. Mendonca landed a spinning back kick to the body in the second round that hurt Kayne. Kayne was backing up while clenching his stomach. After Mendonca charged at him, Kayne got a takedown. From bottom position, Mendonca quickly slipped in a triangle choke that made Kayne tap out.

Bout 4: Justin Gonzales (10-0) vs. Jake Childers (8-0) (Vacant LFA Featherweight Championship)

Gonzales landed punches early in the first round before clinching up. He got a takedown from the clinch eventually. Childers was able to get back to his feet with under two minutes left in the round. Still in the clinch, both fighters scored with knees to the body. Childers landed a knee and elbow while exiting clinch. Gonzales landed a few punches to the head before the round concluded.

Childes tried for a takedown early in the round but couldn’t get it. Gonzales landed some strikes after they left a clinch. Gonzales connected with numerous hooks that had Childers backing up. Gonzales got a takedown a minute into the ground. Childers tried for a keylock from the bottom, letting go of the submission after switching positions. Childers tried for a rear naked choke from the bottom. Gonzales was able to shove Childers’ arm off of his chin. Childers transitioned into an arm triangle,moving into full mount in the process. He let the arm triangle go from the position. They stood back up in a clinch with a minute to go in the round. A pause came on the feet after Childers was struck in the groin. They resumed shortly after, going back into the clinch in no time. 

Childers seemed quite tired to start the third round. Gonzales landed consistent punches to Childers early in the round that had him backing up. Backed up against the cage, Childers took a series of hooks from Gonzales. The constant strikes from Gonzales continued throughout the round. Shelled up against the cage, Childers kept getting hit with hooks to the body and head. 

Gonzales continued the punishment in the fourth round, landing more punches against the cage. The referee intervened in the first minute to end it and give Gonzales the win.
