UFC 251: Leonardo Santos vs. Roman Bogatov Play-by-Play

Former M-1 Lightweight Champion Roman Bogatov stepped into the UFC octagon for the first time on Saturday, fighting Leonardo Santos. Here’s how the bout went.

Bout 5: Leonardo Santos (17-3-1) vs. Roman Bogatov (10-0) (Lightweight)

Bogatov slipped in the first minute of the fight, giving Santos the chance to land a few punches while he got back up. A pause came in the second minute of the fight as Santos was poked in the eye. A doctor came in to check on Santos, with the fight resuming shortly after. Santos got on the back of Bogatov when they resumed, letting him go with half a round to go. Bogatov shot for a single leg takedown in the final minute, however Santos was able to shove him off. Santos took Bogatov down in the final minute, getting on the back before the horn went.

Bogatov shot for a takedown early in the second round, pressing Santos against the fence. Santos did some open fist strikes ot the head. Santos landed two good knees in a clinch that hurt Bogatov. Santos chased after Bogatov with a series of punches and knees that continued to hurt him. After being hit with a clean head kick and more punches, Bogatov shot for a single leg takedown. Santos stayed on the back of Bogatov, throwing dozens of punches to the head. After Santos stopped with the punches, Bogatov took top position in full guard on the ground. Bogatov stood up and threw some punches before the round ended.

Bogatov got a takedown to start the final round, although Santos was quick to get up. Santos was kneed in the ground once they got up, causing a break in the action. Santos was on the ground for a few minutes following the strike. He eventually got to his feet with a doctor in the octagon. The fight resumed on the feet. Bogatov shot for a single leg takedown when they resumed, only getting Santos to his knees. Halfway through the round, a knee from Bogatov hit Santos in the groin again. Bogatov was given a warning yet again instead of a point being deducted. Bogatov got a takedown once they resumed with half a round to go. With Bogatov against the cage and grounded, Bogatov landed a knee to the head of Santos. This was the third foul by Bogatov committed. Bogatov was deducted two points for this foul. They continued again with a minute to go. Bogatov fought with urgency, pressing forward to Santos. Bogatov endured the final moments of the fight. All three judges picked Santos as the winner (29-26, 29-26 & 29-26).

RESULT: Leonardo Santos def. Roman Bogatov via Decision, Unanimous
