Joanne Calderwood was stepped in on short notice to face Jennifer Maia on UFC’s August 1st show. First reported by Instagram page Dama De Ferro MMA, Calderwood steps in to replace Viviane Araujo, who was pulled from the show after testing positive for COVID-19.
The change in opponent presents a bigger challenge than before for Maia, as the eighth-ranked Araujo was replaced by Calderwood, who is currently third in the strawweight division.
Maia’s fight will be her first of 2020, as her most recent fight was a November loss to Katlyn Chookagian via decision. She was set to compete in June at first, but due to fights being rescheduled that plan didn’t happen.
Calderwood lost in 2019 to a similar foe in Chookagian, but she bounced back in her most recent fight, defeating Andrea Lee via split decision.
