In the main event of UFC’s “Fight Night” on Saturday, former UFC Middleweight Champion Robert Whittaker faced Darren Till. Here’s how the five-round fight went.
Bout 15: Robert Whittaker (20-5) vs. Darren Till (18-2-1) (Middleweight)
Early on Till would charge at Whittaker could not come in with anything. Whittaker was dropped in the second minute after the fighters collided, with Till landing an elbow to the head. Till landed some strikes before Whittaker worked his way back to his feet. They clinched against the cage with half of the round to go. Whittaker had a strong finish to the round, coming forward and connecting with a few right hands.
Whittaker connected with a left jab that snapped Till’s head back early in the second round. Till was dropped by an overhand right 30 seconds later, with Whittaker taking full guard on the ground after. Whittaker moved into half guard, connecting with an elbow to the head from the position. Whittaker took the back of Till before they stood up. They separated with two minutes left in the round.
The third round was slower than the two before, with both fighters showing caution throughout. Whittaker tried for a takedown in the fourth minute, failing to land one but scoring a punch upon exit. Whittaker landed an overhand left in the second half of the round. Till stopped a takedown attempt in the final minute of the fight.
In-between rounds, Till told his corner that he was having trouble standing up on his legs. Till hurt Whittaker in the third minute of the round, connecting with an elbow and a few follow-up punches. Whittaker was able to recover and stay on his feet.
Whittaker consistently landed leg kicks in the fifth round. He tried for a takedown in the fourth minute, landing a punch after stopping the attempt. Till landed an elbow in the final minute that opened a large cut on the left side of Whittaker’s head. A pause came in the final minute of the fight, with Whittaker getting a takedown after. They got back to the feet where Whittaker held Till until the fight ended. After five rounds, Whittaker was chosen as the winner (48-47, 48-47 & 48-47).
