Featherweight Herbert Burns got his biggest UFC test on Saturday when he fought the returning and experienced Daniel Pineda. Here’s how he did.
Bout 8: Herbert Burns (11-2) vs. Daniel Pineda (26-13) (Featherweight)
Pineda connected with a hard overhand right in the first minute of the fight. Burns got a takedown in the first minute, although Pineda was quick to get back up. Pineda got Burns off of his back. Pineda got a takedown in the second minute, getting full guard on top. Pineda connected with hard strikes from full guard on top, mostly scoring with punches to the body and head. He stayed in the position until the round ended.
Burns got a takedown in the second round after landing a right cross. Burns got on the back of Pineda when he stood up, taking him back down right after. Pineda threw elbows to the right thigh of Burns from the position. Burns took half guard on top, moving into full mount after. They got back up halfway through the round, with Pineda throwing Burns down by his head for a takedown. Burns stayed on the back of Pineda, although Pineda was able to flip over and take half guard on top. Pineda moved into a crucifix side control position, landing elbows to the head from the position. He continued to land elbows until the final 30 seconds of the fight, where the referee stopped the fight.
