UFC 253: Brad Riddell vs. Alex da Silva Play-by-Play

Finishing off Saturday night’s preliminary card, Brad Riddell faced Alex da Silva. Here’s how their lightweight fight went.

Bout 6: Brad Riddell (8-1) vs. Alex da Silva (21-2) (Lightweight)

Da Silva landed a three-strike combination early, landing a leg kick before connecting with two hooks to the head. Da Silva landed a takedown in the first minute after landing a few more punches. Riddell got back to his feet halfway through the round, although da Silva remained on his back. Da Silvas got a takedown from the body lock in the fourth minute of the round. Riddell was able to take the fight back to striking after being taken down again. Da Silva stopped a takedown in the final minute, trying a guillotine choke after. The fight went to the ground as da Silva held Riddell’s head. The fight ended with da Silva in control.

Riddell clinched with da Silva after both fighters threw wild punches early in the second round. The fighters left a clinch with just over three minutes left in the round. Da Silva landed a knee to the head of Riddell while he dipped his head for a strike. Riddell landed some punches in a clinch. Riddell failed to secure a single leg takedown in the fourth minute of the round. He put together a two-punch combo to the head of da Silva shortly after. Riddell got a takedown with a minute left in the fight, although da Silva was quick to get back to his feet. Riddell stopped a takedown attempt in the final minute of the round.

Riddell opened the final round by landing a series of clean punches. Da Silva put Riddell against the cage in a clinch in the third minute of the round. A pause came during the third round as da Silva claimed he was struck in the eye. The corner of Riddell protested the stoppage as the eye poke came from a knuckle hitting the eye of da Silva during a punch. Riddell got a takedown in the fourth minute of the fight, getting up shortly after. Riddell continued to walk forward and hurt da Silva with combinations of punches. Riddell got a takedown in the closing seconds of the round. Riddell got the win after three rounds (29-28, 29-28 & 29-28).

RESULT: Brad Riddell def. Alex da Silva via Decision, Unanimous
