UFC 253: Diego Sanchez vs. Jake Matthews Play-by-Play

UFC veteran Diego Sanchez was matched with Jake Matthews on the preliminary card of Saturday’s UFC 253 card. The fight went like this.

Bout 5: Diego Sanchez (30-12) vs. Jake Matthews (16-4) (Welterweight)

Sanchez charged at Matthews with a kick to start the fight. Matthews caught a leg kick and tried to clinch with Sanchez, separating after a moment. Matthews was the more active striker early in the fight, walking down Sanchez and keeping him to the perimeter of the cage. Matthews stopped a takedown attempt in the final minute of the round, scoring one of his own seconds later. Matthews moved into half guard, where Sanchez grabbed a hold of a leg. Matthews finished the round with a trio of punches to the head.

Sanchez landed a few leg kicks early in the second round. Matthews connected with a clean right hand while backing up. Sanchez opened up with more punches in the second round, throwing wild combinations at points. Matthews continued to out-strike Sanchez in the round. Sanchez had much more damage on his face than Matthews due to strikes.

Sanchez was dropped in the first minute of the third round with a right hook. Matthews went to the ground and threw punches in an attempt to close out the fight. Sanchez started to bleed significantly due to the strikes. Sanchez attempted a guillotine from the bottom for a moment. Matthews got to his feet with half of the round left. He went back down into full guard shortly after. Matthews threw hammerfist punches to the head in the fourth minute of the fight. Sanchez attempted an armbar from the bottom, losing the position with 40 seconds left.  Matthews threw another flurry of hammerfist punches before the round concluded. Matthews won on scorecards after three rounds (30-26, 30-26 & 30-26).

RESULT: Jake Matthews def. Diego Sanchez via Decision, Unanimous
