Ranked bantamweights Holly Holm and Irene Aldana fought in a five-round main event on Saturday. The fight, which took place on “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, went like this.
Bout 11: Holly Holm (13-5) vs. Irene Aldana (12-5) (Bantamweight)
Holm spent a large amount of the round backtracking, coming forward with multi-punch combinations. Holm attempted a takedown in the final minute of the round. Aldana tried to reverse the takedown as they went down to the knees, going back up to the feet in a clinch after. Holm got a takedown on second attempt, getting half guard for the closing seconds of the round.
Aldana got rocked by a left hook in the second minute of the second round. Holm did not follow up with any strikes. Holm got a takedown from the clinch in the fourth minute of the round. Holm fought to move into side control, although Aldana kept pushing her back to full guard. They got back to the feet with a minute left in the fight.
Holm got her third takedown of the fight from a clinch early in the third round. Holm passed through into side control, trying for a kimura from the position. Holm moved into full mount in the third minute of the round, unleashing punches from the position. They returned to their feet in the fourth minute, although Holm went right back to a clinch after.
Like the three rounds before, Aldana would constantly chase Holm and periodically get hit with strikes. Holm scored her fourth takedown in the third minute of the fourth round. Aldana was quick to return to the feet.
The final round was much like the ones before, where Aldana would chase Holm. Holm scored her fifth takedown in the fourth minute of the fight. Holm landed a head kick as Aldana got up in the final minute of the fight. Holm put together punches and head kicks as the clock wound down. Holm won on all scorecards after five rounds (50-44, 50-45 & 50-45).
RESULT: Holly Holm def. Irene Aldana via Decision, Unanimous
