After a strong performance on “Dana White’s Contender Series,” Cory McKenna made her UFC debut on Saturday against Kay Hansen. Here’s how their matchup went.
Bout 5: Kay Hansen (7-3) vs. Cory McKenna (5-1) (Strawweight)
Both fighters were letting punches go early in the first round. McKenna put Hansen against the cage in a body lock in the second minute. Leaving the clinch, both fighters continued to throw a high amount of strikes. Hansen put McKenna against the cage in a body lock in the fourth minute. McKenna tried for a single leg takedown from the position, although Hansen was able to Hansen dropped McKenna with a knee to the head in the final minute of action. On the ground, Hansen took the back of McKenna. McKenna landed a few punches from the position before they ran out of time.
Hansen put a body lock on McKenna a minute into the second round, putting her against the cage with it. Hansen scored a takedown in the third minute, taking the back of McKenna immediately. McKenna was able to escape the position, taking full guard on top after. She was able to hold the top position until the round ended.
The back-and-forth striking between the fighters continued early in the third round. Hansen was able to get a takedown in the second minute of the round, taking half guard on top. McKenna was active with hard elbows from the bottom. Hansen looked for an arm triangle choke in the final minute, moving into side control and then full mount while applying it. McKenna reversed the position, taking half guard on top while leaving the choke. McKenna held top position until the round ran out of time. Going to the judges to find a winner, McKenna got the win (29-28, 29-28 & 29-28).
RESULT: Cory McKenna def. Kay Hansen via Decision, Unanimous
