UFC Looking To Add Joseph Benavidez vs. Askar Askarov To March 6th Show

A bantamweight fight between former title challenger Joseph Benavidez and undefeated fighter Askar Askarov is being targeted for a March 6th UFC card. News of the potential matchup was first reported by Igor Lazorin.

The fight joins a growing card that does not have a location set for it yet.

Should the fight be placed on the card, Benavidez will be competing in a non-championship fight for the first time since 2019. His last two outings, both losses, came against Deiveson Figueiredo.

Their meeting in February saw Figueiredo stop the fight in the second round with strikes. A title was not awarded to Figueiredo due to him missing weight for the bout.

Figueiredo put on an even more dominant performance in their rematch, where he choked Benavidez out late in the first round to claim the belt back in July.

Benavidez, a veteran of the sport, will be facing an undefeated fighter for the first time since his beginnings as a pro fighter in 2007.

Askarov, a former ACB Flyweight Champion, has competed in the UFC three times. He went to a draw against Brandon Moreno in his UFC debut. He has won twice in 2020, defeating Tim Elliott and Alexandre Pantoja via decision.

UFC’s March 6th card is without a main event currently. Here are the matchups that have been reported for it.

Bout 4: Thiago Santos (21-8) vs. Aleksandar Rakic (13-2) (Light Heavyweight)

Bout 3: Randy Costa (6-1) vs. Trevin Jones (12-6) (Bantamweight)

Bout 2: Uros Medic (6-0) vs. Aalon Cruz (8-3) (Lightweight)

Bout 1: Joseph Benavidez (28-7) vs. Askar Askarov (13-0-1) (Flyweight)
