Strawweights Mackenzie Dern and Virna Jandiroba fought on the main card of UFC 256 on Saturday. Here’s how their three-round matchup went.
Bout 8: Mackenzie Dern (9-1) vs. Virna Jandiroba (16-1) (Strawweight)
Dern put together a few punches in the opening moments of the first round. Jandiroba answered back with two punches in the first minute. As the fight stayed on the feet for most of the round, Dern continued to out-strike Jandiroba, landing combinations of punches. Dern looked for a single leg takedown in the fourth minute, although Jandiroba was able to stay on her feet.
Jandiroba was connecting with her right hand early in the second round. Jandiroba put Dern against the cage in a clinch in the second minute. She landed a knee and a punch to the head after leaving the position. A pause came late in the round as Jandiroba was poked in the eye. The fight resumed after a minute or so of a pause. Jandiroba stopped a takedown right after they resumed. A cut opened on Dern’s nose when in a clinch. Jandiroba scored a takedown from the position, taking full guard on top. Dern seemed bothered by the cut. Jandiroba kept control on top until the round concluded.
Dern looked for a takedown early in the third round, although Jandiroba was able to resist it. Dern seemingly wobbled Jandiroba with punches after they traded strikes in the third minute. Dern looked for a takedown after, although Jandiroba was able to take full guard on top when they went down. Jandiroba left the position, forcing Dern to get up as well. They went back to trading strikes in the fourth minute. Dern was able to land body kicks during the exchanges. Jandiroba pulled guard in the final minute, grabbing a leg of Dern before the round ran out of time. Needing judges to find a winner, Dern was given the win (29-28, 29-28 & 29-28).
