UFC 256: Tony Ferguson vs. Charles Oliveira Play-by-Play

Returning after a losing a title fight in May, Tony Ferguson fought Charles Oliveira in the co-main event of Saturday’s UFC 256 pay-per-view. The fight went like this.

Bout 9: Tony Ferguson (25-4) vs. Charles Oliveira (29-8) (Lightweight)

Oliveira landed a slapping leg kick early in the fight. Both fighters were quick to land with hard hooks early in the fight. Oliveira landed a takedown in the second minute of action, landing in side control. Oliveira moved into full mount in the third minute. Still in the position late in the round, Oliveira connected with some elbows. Oliveira looked for an armbar in the final seconds of the round. He extended the arm until the round ran out of time.

Oliveira landed a takedown early in the second round. A pause came on the ground as Ferguson landed an illegal upkick. A cut opened near the left eyebrow of Oliveira on the ground, although it was not due to the upkick. The fight resumed eventually with Oliveira in control on top. Oliveira moved into a north-south position in the second minute. Oliveira controlled the fight on the ground until the round expired.

Oliveira scored a takedown a minute into the final round. Oliveira went into full mount in the second minute. Oliveira went on his back in the third minute to attempt a triangle choke. Losing the submission, Oliveira went to side control on top. Oliveira kept control on top until the round ran out of time. Oliveira won on the scorecards after three rounds (30-26, 30-26 & 30-27).

RESULT: Charles Oliveira def. Tony Ferguson via Decision, Unanimous
