Geoff Neal fought his first main event bout in the UFC on Saturday, fighting Stephen Thompson. The welterweights closed out UFC’s 2020 schedule with a main event fight. Here’s how it went.
Bout 12: Stephen Thompson (15-4-1) vs. Geoff Neal (13-2) (Welterweight)
Thompson had a better start to the fight, keeping a distance from Neal where he was able to land kicks and jabs. While Neal was often walking Thompson down, he wasn’t throwing as many strikes. The fighters clashed heads during an exchange late in the fight, opening a cut on both fighter’s heads. The fight had a short pause before the final 15 seconds of the round played out.
Neal put Thompson against the cage in a body lock to start the second round. Thompson left the position in the second minute of the fight. Thompson spent most of the round keeping a distance with jabs. Neal got close to Thompson late in the round, landing a clean left cross during an exchange.
Neal clinched with Thompson in the second minute of the third round. They separated again in the third minute of the round. Neal kept charging at Thompson, making more of an attempt than ever to close the distance. He clinched with Thompson again in the fourth minute of the round. Thompson threw a head kick and then put together a series of punches in the final minute of the round.
Neal got close and clinched with Thompson in the second minute of the fourth. Back at striking distance, Thompson continued to throw a high volume of jabs. Neal finished the round with another clinch.
Thompson seemingly went into the final round with a somewhat hurt right leg. Neal was able to connect with a left hand early in the final round. Neal got close and connected with a few punches late in the fight, although Thompson was answering back. Thompson won with a perfect score after five rounds (50-45, 50-45 & 50-45).
