Israel Adesanya Will Move Up To Light Heavyweight To Challenge Jan Blachowicz At UFC 259

Israel Adesanya will look to become a two-division champion on March 6th, moving up to face the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jan Blachowicz at UFC 259. News of the champion-versus-champion fight was first reported by Brett Okamoto of ESPN.

The fight joins a pay-per-view card that does not have a location set for it currently.

Blachowicz will look to defend his 205-pound belt for the first time in the fight. He earned the belt in September, defeating Dominick Reyes to claim the vacant championship.

Adesanya, the current UFC Middleweight Champion, will jump ahead of a busy light heavyweight division to make the superfight happen.

Glover Teixeira, the current #1 ranked UFC light heavyweight objected to Adesanya getting a title fight when it was rumoured months ago.

“I’m an old man. You’re going to give the shot to [Israel] Adesanya and make me wait? … Give me the shot,” said Teixeira back in November.

Teixeira is currently on a five-fight win streak that includes victories over other ranked fighters.

Adesanya has defended his 185-pound belt twice since defeating Robert Whittaker in 2019 to earn the belt. His last fight was a stoppage victory over Paulo Costa at UFC 253.

UFC 259 has numerous bouts set for it currently, including a UFC Featherweight Championship fight between Amanda Nunes and Megan Anderson. Here are the bouts that have been reported so far.
