Former UFC Flyweight Champion Nicco Montano has been released by the UFC after missing weight for a fight in July. Montano’s departure from the promotion was confirmed by Guilherme Cruz and Damon Martin of MMA Fighting on Tuesday.
Montano dramatically missed weight for a bantamweight fight against Wu Yanan last week, coming in five pounds over the non-championship limit.
The cancelled bout continued troubles for Montano, who had been sidelined throughout 2020 due to numerous scheduled matchups being thrown out. Fights for Montano were taken off lineups last year due to her not being medically cleared, suffering an injury, contracting COVID-19, and more.
Montano’s last fight was in July of 2019, where she lost a unanimous decision to Julianna Pena.
That fight was her return after her short title run. Montano was the inaugural UFC Flyweight Champion in 2017, having defeated veteran Roxanne Modafferi for the belt. However, she was stripped of the title a year later after weight cut issues forced her out of a fight against Valentina Shevchenko.
