Media company Triller will launch a new combat sports project later this month, debuting the “Triad Combat” series on November 27th. The event will see boxers and MMA fighters compete in a unique striking ruleset within a triangular rope structure, like a three-sided boxing ring.
The debut event is set to happen at the Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, USA. News of the lineup was revealed by reporter Ariel Helwani on Tuesday.
In the top fight of the card, former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir will face former boxing prizefighter Kubrat Pulev.
Mir, 42, returned to combat sports in April with a boxing loss to Steve Cunningham.
The show later this month is also set to have matchups that include UFC alumni like Matt Mitrione, Mike Perry, and Albert Tumenov. Bellator veteran Derek Campos is also expected to compete on the card.
The “Triad Combat” series presents a style of combat that attempts to create a “true middle ground between boxing and MMA,” per Sean Wheelock, Director of Rules and Regulations for “Triad Combat.”
The strictly punching ruleset allows fighters to engage at a striking range, but also gives them the chance to come close and land strikes in underhook, overhook, half thai plum and waist clinch positions.
Along with the strikes usually allowed in boxing, the ruleset permits spinning backfists and standing hammerfists. Fighters are also allowed to stand on their opponent’s foot during exchanges – not to be confused with intentionally stomping on their foot.
The event will take place in a Triangular ring, which is similar to the “Trigon” structure that is used by bare-knuckle boxing promotion BYB.
Triller is mainly a media company that runs a music video app with the same name. The company has been invested in boxing events for the past year. They have focused more on the market of novelty fights, bringing in older fighters like Evander Holyfield or internet stars like Jake Paul to compete.
