Thanh Le scored a quick and brutal win to retain his ONE Championship 155-pound belt on Friday night, knocking out Garry Tonon in the first minute of action with punches.
Tonon’s win headlined ONE Championship’s “Lights Out” card from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.
Tonon attempted to grapple early with Le, although the damaging strikes on the ground from Le caused the fight to end in just moments.
Tonon pulled guard and attempted a submission by grabbing a leg of Le. Punches from Le connected cleanly on Tonon in this position, knocking him out and putting an end to the fight.
Tonon, a noted grappling ace, was given the title shot after attaining an undefeated MMA record of six wins. His previous victory was in late 2020, where he worked toward a unanimous decision victory over Koyomi Matsushima.
The fight saw Le defend his belt for the first time since earning it in 2020 with a stoppage victory over Martin Nguyen. He now has a five-fight streak of finish wins.
Lineker Utilizes Boxing To Stop Fernandes, Claim ONE Belt
Former UFC fighter John Lineker became the newest ONE Bantamweight Champion, securing the 145-pound weight class belt with a second-round finish win over Bibiano Fernandes.
The solid boxing skills from Lineker were shown yet again on Friday. After connecting with hard punches throughout their short battle, Lineker eventually landed a left hook that dropped Fernandes hard and finished their fight.
Lineker’s win didn’t come without some early struggles. He was taken down numerous times by Fernandes and even got knocked down once in the opening round.
Lineker was given a title shot after scoring three consecutive wins with the promotion from 2019 to 2021. This included finish victories over Troy Worthen and Kevin Belingon.
Fernandes was a long-time champion for ONE Championship, holding the belt two times during his time with the promotion. His appearance on Friday was his first since 2019, the year where he closed out his rivalry against Kevin Belingon with two finish wins.
Nguyen Bounces Back With Finish Over Gorobets
Former champion Martin Nguyen returned to the win column on Friday, scoring a stoppage victory against Kiril Gorobets.
A constant flurry of strikes from Nguyen tired and hurt Gorobets by the third round. Up against the cage, Gorobets’ hands dropped and he was eventually knocked down by strikes that caused the bout to end.
Gorobets found himself in trouble late in the second round as well, as knees dropped him late in that round.
Nguyen is now back to his winning ways for the first time since he dropped his belt to Thanh Le in 2020. His previous appearance was a finish loss to Kim Jae Woong in September 2021.
Gorobets was joining ONE Championship on a strong nine-fight winning streak from 2016 to 2020.
Azizpour Stops GLORY Alum Londt
Iraj Azizpour picked up a stoppage victory on Friday, using heavy fists to put away Ismael Londt in the second round of a kickboxing match.
Azizpour’s first knockdown came early in the second round, hurting Londt with a short right hook. Later in the round, a left hook dropped him again and put an end to their fight.
Azizpour won his ONE debut just a few months prior, defeating Anderson Braddock Silva via unanimous decision.
Londt, a former GLORY Kickboxer, was making his first appearance in ONE.
Mattheis Stops Silva In Return Fight
Adrian Mattheis picked up a win in his return to the cage, scoring an abrupt second-round stoppage victory over Alex Silva.
Mattheis dropped Silva only moments into the second round, connecting with a lead jab and then a right cross. This combination clearly hurt Silva and caused the referee to jump in and end the fight.
The first round of the contest saw Mattheis and Silva have a close battle on the ground. While Silva looked for submissions on the ground, Mattheis focused on landing punches.
Mattheis was making his first appearance in over two years. His last fight, a late 2019 loss to Stefer Rahardian, ended a four-fight winning streak for him.
Silva entered Friday on a two-fight winning streak.
Zhang Finishes Tonna In ONE Debut
Zhang Peimian made an impact in his ONE Championship debut, dropping Josh Tonna numerous times before eventually picking up a second-round finish win.
Zhang dropped Tonna three times in the second round, causing the fight to end. Most of these knockdowns came from punches to the body of Tonna.
Zhang was on the hunt heading into the second round after a successful start. He scored a knockdown in the opening round as well, dropping Tonna with a left hook to the body.
Tonna was appearing for the first time since losing a Muay Thai title fight to Sam-A Gaiyanghadao in 2020.
The Rest of the Card
Eko Roni Saptura moved his streak of first-round finish wins to six consecutive bouts on Friday, securing a rear naked choke submission against Chan Rothana.
A cut that Iman Barlow caused on Daniela Lopez early put an end to their Muay Thai fight via doctor stoppage. The bout was Barlow’s ONE debut.
Liam Nolan had a quick win in his return, using knees to stop Kim Kyung Lock in the first round of a Muay Thai bout.
Lin Heqin had a strong showing in her first-ever ONE kickboxing bout, working to a unanimous decision victory over Milagros Lopez.
