4/9 3:20PM EDT UPDATE: The article has been updated with a statement from the management team of Rose Namajunas.
The co-main for UFC 249 has been lost, with Rose Namajunas being pulled from her strawweight fight against Jessica Andrade. Per Evelyn Rodrigue and Raphael Marinho of Combate, the fight has been taken off of the card.
On Thursday, the management for Namajunas announced she was taken off the card due to two family members passing away from COVID-19.
“Her hopes are to return to the Octagon as soon as possible but for now we ask for people to respect their privacy during this time,” said SuckerPunch Entertainment in an Instagram post on Thursday.
The fight was meant to be a rematch between the two former UFC Strawweight Champions. Their first meeting was at UFC 237, where Andrade defeated Namajunas via stoppage in the second round.
The biggest fight that UFC 249 lost was it’s main event between UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. With Nurmagomedov being taken off due to travel restrictions, Ferguson’s new opponent was named Justin Gaethje on Tuesday. The fight will be for the lightweight division’s interim belt.
UFC 249 is set to take place on April 18th at the Tachi Palace Casino Resort in California. The venue was announced yesterday, as the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak made the promotion find a new location.
