Laying Down Leather is a Monday morning blog series where I share my tidbit thoughts on MMA, share the past week’s work, and look at what’s ahead.
Good morning everyone and welcome to another week of everything. The big story last weekend was that UFC’s overlooked fight card ended up impressing with big performances from names who haven’t gotten much shine in the past.
Card Starts With A Boom
Honestly, I personally was never big in the pool of thought that this show was lame. Sure, there wasn’t the big names we’re used to having, but I wasn’t quick to count out the show.
The show was quick to try to turn heads, with three first-minute stoppages, coming from Christian Aguilera, Tyson Nam and Julia Avila. The first two of the three punching their way into a performance of the night bonus.
The show had entertaining performances from many more fighters, including a close and exciting featherweight battle between Andre Fili and Charles Jourdain.
Calvillo Closes The Show
The main event was a dominant win for Cynthia Calvillo, who in her flyweight debut, defeated Jessica Eye via decision. Some thought the fight was too slow or boring, but I didn’t mind it.
One thing worried me, and that’s that nobody seems like a good challenger for UFC Flyweight Champion Valentina Shevchenko. Similar to Amanda Nunes, I feel like Shevchenko might run into the issue of not having any more opponents.
I did full coverage of the evening, which can be viewed here.
Fights Continue In Vegas
Next week’s show from Las Vegas, Nevada, USA is an interesting one. I’m definitely interested to see some of the matchups. Names I look forward to watching are Roxanne Modafferi, Belal Muhammad and Cortney Casey, among others.
What’s Coming Up on Knockdown News
This week will be another usual week of news coverage here. On Flashback Friday this week we’ll take a break from the usual UFC or Pride FC shows, watching the first WEC event.
Have a good week. See you around.
