In the main event of UFC’s show on Saturday night, Curtis Blaydes and Alexander Volkov squared off in a fight scheduled for five rounds. The heavyweight battle went like this.
Bout 12: Curtis Blaydes (13-2) vs. Alexander Volkov (31-7) (Heavyweight)
Blaydes got a single leg takedown right off the bat. They stood up in a clinch, where Blaydes got him back down to his knees. He threw some knees to the legs of Volkov from the position. He stayed on the back of Volkov until the round ended.
Blaydes connected with a few clean punches to start the second round. He got another takedown after landing with an overhand right. They got up for a moment in a clinch, where Blaydes got a takedown yet again, getting top position in full guard. After a few minutes of not much work, Blaydes connected with a few elbows. They got to the feet, but Blaydes got a takedown before the round concluded.
While Volkov was able to resist early, Blaydes eventually got a takedown in the third round. Volkov tried for a guillotine choke from bottom position in the final minute, although Blaydes slipped out eventually. They stood up before the round ended.
Blaydes got a takedown in the fourth round on the back of Volkov. Volkov got up, with Blaydes getting the fight back down quickly. The fighters were stood up due to inactivity at the end of the round. Volkov got a takedown in the final minute.
Volkov landed a few takedowns early in the round. Blaydes got the fight down for a minute or so before they got back up in a clinch. Blaydes got a takedown with just over a minute to go. Blaydes got a unanimous decision after (49-46, 48-47 & 48-46).
