Heavyweights Maurice Greene and Gian Villante fought on the main card of UFC’s “Fight Night” on Saturday. It went like this.
Bout 8: Maurice Greene (8-4) vs. Gian Villante (17-11) (Heavyweight)
Greene kept Villante at a distance early with kicks to the body. A pause came in the second minute of the round as a kick hit the groin of Villante. Villante’s lead leg started to redden near the end of the round due to cumulative strikes. Villante was throwing his own kicks too.
Greene was started to put together combinations of knees, kicks and punches early in the second round. Villante had a good fourth minute, landing a head kick to Greene. The overall volume of kicks in this fight was higher than the usual contest.
Villante connected with a punch that hurt Greene early in the final round. An eye poke early in the round to Villante caused a break in action. When they resumed, Villante countered Greene with a punch that dropped him. Villante went to the ground, landing some elbows and punches from top position. Villante was able to move into full mount while continuing with punches, although the pace did slow down and eventually stop. Villante moved into a half guard. Greene put in a choke from the bottom that eventually made Villante tap out.
