Bellator 242 Loses Heavyweight Fight As Steve Mowry Tests Positive For COVID-19

Bellator’s returning show on Friday night is down to six bouts after undefeated heavyweight Steve Mowry tested positive for COVID-19. The announcement of the positive test broke on Tuesday via the fighter’s Instagram.

Mowry was scheduled to face Rudy Schafforth on the preliminary card of Bellator’s show, which is set to happen at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, USA.

“Long story short I’m not fighting because of a positive COVID-19 test. 2020, am I right?” said Mowry in his Instagram post.

Bellator waited longer than most MMA promotions to return, with their plan currently being to use the Mohegan Sun Arena as their hub for events going forward.

The hub system has been implemented in other instances in sports, including “bubble” systems used by NBA and Top Rank Boxing.

Bellator has yet to issue a statement about the status of Mowry’s bout on Bellator 242. It is not known whether an opponent can be found for Schafforth, or if he is off of the card as well.

Bellator 242 has six bouts still intact, now with two preliminary bouts and four main card matchups. In the main event of the show, bantamweights Sergio Pettis and Ricky Bandejas will meet in a three-round battle.
