UFC on ESPN+ 35: Bryan Barberena vs. Anthony Ivy Play-by-Play

Saturday night’s UFC preliminary card presented a welterweight battle between Bryan Barberena and Anthony Ivy. The fight went like this.

Bout 2: Bryan Barberena (14-7) vs. Anthony Ivy (8-3) (Welterweight)

Ivy circled the outside of the cage to start the fight. Ivy shot for a takedown in the first minute of the fight, although Barberena was able to back up against the cage to resist. Ivy was able to get Barberena to the ground for a moment before he got back to his feet in a clinch. Barberena landed a knee in the clinch before they escaped the position. Ivy slipped after throwing a leg kick, allowing Barberena to land a hammerfist strike on the ground before he got back up. Barberena hurt Ivy with strikes, causing Ivy to shell up against the cage. Barberena landed an elbow to Ivy after exiting a clinch. Ivy put Barberena against the cage again in the final minute of the round. He got a takedown moments after. Ivy landed an elbow from half guard before the round ran out of time.

Barberena landed a couple of punches early in the second round before Ivy tried again for a takedown. Barberena was pressed against the cage in a body lock after resisting a takedown attempt. Ivy was dropped by a strike in the third minute of the round while coming forward. A takedown attempt was stuffed by Barberena on the ground in the third minute. Back on the feet, Barberena landed a left hand that made Ivy attempt another takedown. Barberena landed a series of punches after stopping a takedown from Ivy in the fourth minute. Ivy connected with a clean two-punch combination in the final minute of the round. Barberena shot for a takedown in the closing seconds of the round, although the fight stayed against the cage until the round ran out of time.

Ivy had a takedown attempt blocked early in the third round. Ivy secured a takedown later in the minute. Both fighters landed punches from the position. Barberena worked his way back to his feet and separated in the second minute of the round. Ivy had a takedown stopped in the third minute of the fight. Another attempt saw Barberena go down to his knees before standing back up. Barberena stopped a takedown, although he went to the ground in the process and took control in side position. They both traded punches in the fourth minute of the round before Ivy tried and failed to get a takedown. Barberena put together a series of punches on the feet that caused Ivy to shell up again. Ivy got a takedown in the final minute of the round. Barberena tried for a kimura from the bottom position. Ivy kept side control until the round concluded. After 15 minutes of competition, Barberena picked up a win (30-27, 30-27 & 29-28).

RESULT: Bryan Barberena def. Anthony Ivy via Decision, Unanimous
