UFC on ESPN+ 36: Colby Covington vs. Tyron Woodley Play-by-Play

Ranked welterweights Colby Covington and Tyron Woodley competed in a five-round battle in the main event of Saturday’s UFC card. The fight went like this.

Bout 14: Colby Covington (15-2) vs. Tyron Woodley (19-5-1) (Welterweight)

The fighters traded leg kicks in the first minute of the fight. Covington got a takedown 30 seconds into the bout. Woodley was able to work up back to his feet a minute later, escaping a body lock as well. Covington landed a right cross in the fourth minute that made Woodley clinch up.

Covington put Woodley against the cage in a clinch for a moment in the second round. Woodley scored a takedown in the third minute of the round. Covington got to his feet while Woodley had a hold of Covington’s head. They returned to striking with two minutes left in the fight. Covington clinched with Woodley in the fourth minute. Woodley motioned that he was kicked in the groin in the fourth minute of the fight. The referee did not stop the fight. Woodley connected with a superman punch in the final minute of the round. Covington landed a right jab, with Woodley countering with a two-punch combo.

The referee paused the fight early in the third round due to an eye poke to Woodley. A doctor was brought in to take a look at Woodley. The fight resumed after a few minutes were given to Woodley. Covington put Woodley in a clinch against the cage after a minute of striking from both fighters. Covington kept control with a clinch for the rest of the round.

Covington opened the fourth round with a body kick. Covington shot for a takedown after landing a right hook to the head. After staying in a clinch for a minute, Covington scored a takedown. He took half guard on top, loving into full guard after. Covington landed an elbow and a flurry of punches from the top. A cut opened on Woodley’s head during the exchange. Covington kept with punches from the top until the round concluded.

Covington scored a takedown a minute into the final round. Woodley held Covington in a guillotine choke. Woodley screamed due to a rib injury, causing the fight to end.

RESULT: Colby Covington def. Tyron Woodley via TKO, Injury (RD 5, 1:19)
